  • New Books for Everyone!

    Funded Feb 24, 2023

Students were so excited when they learned that the book project was funded. When the Amazon boxes started coming in they couldn't wait to rip the box open to see what books had arrived. They immediately started a sign up sheet to check books out. We recently we had a school wide March Madness Reading Competition and my students read for over 8, 000 minutes! They have been talking with one another about the stories they are reading and giving honest feedback about the books to their peers. It is truly great to see.

Having updated relevant books in various genres shows students that we promote reading and care about the selections that we present to them. Thank you for giving this opportunity to the students.”

    With gratitude,

    Mrs. Dolbec

  • Diverse Books Are Mirrors for Diverse Kids

    Funded Mar 6, 2020

I just want to take a minute and say thank you for donating to my project. I am overwhelmed with the outpouring of support for my classroom. The students are truly humbled knowing that there are people out there, besides teachers, that care about their education. I tell them all the time something that my parents told me, "Education is power" and the more access they have to books is essential to their literacy. Thank you for contributing!”

    With gratitude,

    Mrs. Dolbec

  • Let's Keep Reading!

    Funded Sep 17, 2019

My class is thoroughly enjoying the variety of new books. They are flying off the book shelves! Some books haven't even seen the book shelf, because when one student returns it, it is immediately in the hands of another avid reader! The students have been particularly interested in a graphic novel written by a local author from Worcester, MA.

The book is called Hey, Kiddo by Jarrett J. Krosoczka. It hits home for some of our students with it's mature content and very real situations. It also intrigues them because the illustrations are of landmarks around Worcester that they see all of the time and have grown up around.

We greatly appreciate your generosity and want you to know that you've had a great impact in my classroom. Some of my students have developed a love for reading recently, because of these new high interest novels. That is HUGE for adolescents!”

    With gratitude,

    Mrs. Dolbec

  • Staying Informed Is Essential To Our Future

    Funded Aug 4, 2018

I can't thank you enough for your generous donation. When most people inherit money, they tend to spend it or invest it into their own family. It is truly touching that you wanted to share with us to enrich the lives of some awesome middle schoolers! When I explained to them that we were given this donation to obtain a subscription of TIME Edge magazine for the year, some students were truly stunned. It shows them that there are wonderful people out there that care about their education. It's one thing when their teacher tells them, but for a stranger to be invested in their future is humbling for them.

The first day we used the program was fantastic! I was able to upload all of the children beforehand, so logging in was a breeze, and I was able to adjust reading levels on articles for my students that need help by just checking off a box next to their names (they didn't even know they were getting an accommodated version). I chose 4 articles for students to pick from, "Are You Average" and "Hooked on Games" were definitely the two most popular choices. I loved walking around the classroom listening to the discussion that was generated. One student said, "Wow, my mom always tells me I play too many video games for too long, I just thought she wanted me to do my chores or play with my sister. I didn't realize there was actually science behind it. My brain and my eyesight are affected daily. YIKES!" When students were finished with their article they asked if they could browse the website to read other articles that peaked their interest. The fact that they wanted to read, explore, and learn more was splendid! Thank you again!”

    With gratitude,

    Mrs. Dolbec

  • Please, Let Them Read!

    Funded Apr 26, 2018

I just want to take a minute and try to express in words the gratitude my students and I feel for your generous donations. It makes my heart full when a community comes together to help enhance students' education, and books are essential to student growth. It is a struggle to get some middle school students to read and explore different genres or books, especially with technology advancing so rapidly and taking over our lives. There is something to say about having a tangible book in your hands that just adds to the experience and joy of reading. With your donation I was able to add 25 high interest novels of several different genres. These books are flying off of my bookshelves! Students are on a wait list to read many of the titles, such as "The Hate You Give," which my students tell me is being made into a movie.

Again, thank you so much for your kindness and generosity!”

    With gratitude,

    Mrs. Dolbec

This year in my Literature class we will explore the many elements of literature through different genres of texts. We start the year off with a classic novel, Where the Red Fern Grows. Through reading this novel, students will be able to expand their knowledge of the literary elements by reading and discussing as a whole class or with small groups. We will then move on to Biographies/Autobiographies where students will conduct research on 3 people (a historical figure, an entertainer/athlete, and someone they know personally). Then we will transition into our Drama unit. During this unit we read the screenplay Brian's Song. Mid year we move on to shorter units such as Short Stories and Poetry. We will end the year in Literary Circles groups. This is a student centered reading group where students will choose a novel they are interested in, and read, discuss, and facilitate their own group activities.
