  • Reading Resurrection!

    With all of the technology and extra-curricular activities available to today's students, it isn't any wonder that teachers are noticing significant declines in the number of students who read for pleasure. With this in mind, my hope was to create a sought-after space for students to WANT to visit for the sole purpose of reading. This was the concept that spurred my two Donor's Choose projects: "Reading Resurrection!" and "Rockin' Readers."

    Donors came out in a big way and helped fulfill not only the wishlist for books ("Reading Resurrection!") but also provided some creative alternative seating that draws students in and makes them want to participate in this reading endeavor. Today was the first day and I was thrilled to see how the students reacted to the space and the variety of books! Thank you so much for your generosity and helping to show my seventh grade students that reading can be enjoyable!”

  • Rockin' Readers

    Thank you so much for all of your support! My students are so excited to have this new reading nook and they are already signing up for their turn in the comfy seats! The variety of books has been a huge hit and it is so refreshing to hear students debating over which book to read first. I even had two seventh grade students compromise over who got to read "To Kill a Mockingbird" first. The other child "settled" for "All-American Boys." Today was the first day and it went better than I could have ever have hoped! Thank you again!”

Today's students are so inundated with external stimuli and technology that they often fail to nurture a connection with literature and the written word (unless it is found via social media or text). Having quality materials available to them will increase their access to literature that they can relate to and enjoy. Help me to resurrect a passion for reading for pleasure! I am convinced that there are so many other things to do, the opportunity to learn enjoyment through reading gets lost and/or students fail to determine what types of books interest them. These materials may just fix that!

About my class
