The students at our urban, high-poverty charter middle school need access to a whole range of books in our classroom; we need a well-stocked classroom library where students can feel free to browse and skim, and then select and savor. Most of our students are from low-income families, and their access to books isn’t always easy. We’ll have all variety of readers in our classes: from resistant and struggling to voracious and enthusiastic. By having the appropriate range of books in our classroom, we’ll be sure that they can get into the hands of our eager, developing readers. Maybe they will become ardent lovers of fantasy and science fiction. Perhaps they will come to adore Jerry Spinelli. We’ll be giving them an opportunity to name more than a few favorites by the time they become 7th graders! Whatever the case may be, we want to make sure that they have options along a range of difficulty levels and genres.
