I believe that my students can be the best they can be when they are in a learning environment that provides them with multisensory ways to fully address their needs as they explore and discover more about themselves and their learning environment by using materials that either calm, soothe or positively affect their senses as they gain a clearer understanding of what they are learning when they are happy and focused. The materials that I chose for my project will provide my students with a variety of sensory learning items to utilize as empowering resources to help them gain a greater sense of control, sustained attention and focus. The Step-N-Stones will give my students the sensory feedback that their bodies need in order to remain calm and be able to sustain their attention and focus. The square patterned carpet will provide them with a space that excites and motivates them to learn more about how to celebrate their senses by engaging in multi-sensory activities that nurture and acknowledge them. As they freely choose the sensory items that they like when they visit our soon-to-be (with your help and generous contributions) inviting sensory area in our classroom, we will foster a learning environment that is composed of learners who love to be in school, where they feel loved, accepted, understood and celebrated for the amazing individuals that they are. Our classroom is a place where we celebrate the gift of autism everyday by providing students with learning resources that make sense to them as their sensory needs are addressed accordingly.
