I am so excited to be able to have these books added to my classroom library, made possible by you! Thank you for your support and generosity in funding this project. Reading is life and I aim to make this a possibility for my students. They just need the right book to ignite that reading flame. Thanks again for making this possible. I am truly grateful.”

  • Healthy, Step by Step

    Funded Jan 16, 2025

Not a day goes by that a student does not approach me to show me their "health watch" to display the number of steps they have already taken that day. When I gave them the challenge to walk and track 1000 steps using this watch, they were eager to complete it and then some! Some students are clocking in 10,000 steps by the end of the day and they are amazed at how many steps they have taken and decide to make even more steps, on purpose, before the day's end, to see how far they can go. This watch has been a game changer for my students, bringing awareness to how movement is important for their mind, body, and soul, and how easily they can add movement by simply going for a stroll. Thank you, dear donor, for making it possible for me to get my students to move and get healthy, step by step.”

  • Engaging Books for Our Classroom Library

    Funded Jan 12, 2025

My students requested, I asked on DonorsChoose, and you fulfilled and came through. Thank you! The students are very happy to get their hands on the manga books series "A Man and his Cat." This was a highly requested book series that I was very eager to make available into my classroom library and thanks to you, I now have it. The students are commenting that they like the simplicity of the books, how it literally is about the life of a man spent with his cat, and his music buddies, and that its simplicity brings them a sense of comfort. I am simply happy to be able to provide these books and that my students are reading and enjoying the reading. Thanks again, dear donor, for making it possible for me to provide this manga book series that my students are happy to read.”

  • Replenishing Engaging Books that Typically "Grow Legs"

    Funded Jan 12, 2025

The students and I are very happy to report that they are extremely happy to be able to finish off the school year with books that have been so generously provided by you, that are engaging and highly desirable. They are the types of books that are very difficult to put down, once you have started reading them. That brings such a smile to my heart, to hear my students talk about how wonderful a book they are reading is. In this day and technology age, it is difficult to make clear how amazing books really are, seeing as students would rather be on some social media platform or online game, so I rely heavily on highly engaging books such as the ones you have made possible for me to re-purchase. I say re-purchase because as I mentioned in my project story, these books are so good, they "grow legs" and disappear out of my classroom. Thanks to your generosity, I have these books, once again, available in my classroom library, and my students are happy to be able to read them and I am grateful that they are experiencing the magic that is a book. Thanks again.”

  • Flexible Desk Classroom Arrangement For Six More, Total of 18

    Funded Dec 4, 2024

We have so much more space in our classroom, thanks to you! Our desks now fit our room and we have so much more leg room and able to move around, to even sit on the ground with a pillow if the occasion should arise. We are grateful! Also, the students are able to separate their table groups to form new groups and/or work independently if they so choose. So many possibilities now that we are not stuck to the big clunky tables that not only took more space than we had available, but did not allow for the separate, independent space one needs sometimes.

Dear donor, our space feels great and we could not have done it without out. Thank you from the bottom of our hearts for funding this project. For making this possible. We appreciate you.”

  • Smooth Classroom Transitions

    Funded Nov 26, 2024

The students absolutely love their new, personalized, transition bags. They were able to draw designs on their bags that they are proud of. They now definitely have smooth transitions for sure! No more dropping of binders, books, or pencil cases. Additionally, these bags fit nicely in their desks, ready for transition time and ready for storage when time to go home. I am truly grateful for the ease of movement from class to class these bags have been able to provide. Very easy and very smooth. Moreover, they are strong and sturdy canvas bag that will absolutely last all school year long.

Thank you so much! These bags have brought a lot of joy to my students and me. We appreciate you, your kindness and generosity. We would not be able to have these smooth transitions without you. Thanks again for making this a possibility.”

  • Guided Journaling for SEL

    Funded Aug 20, 2024

Journaling, a very new concept for most of my students. They are quickly learning that journaling about their very big feelings is a very good way to help them understand and manage their emotions. That having these big feelings are very human, very normal, and that there are ways to help them manage them and journaling is one of them. My students look forward to completing the journal pages, answering questions they would have not thought of, helping them see what they are feeling and experiencing in a whole new way. Dear donor, thank you for making it possible for every single one of my homeroom students to have their very own journal. They are really enjoying writing in them and learning about themselves. Thanks again.”

My students live in a low socioeconomic area where being in school is not really thought of as something amazing and wonderful. They are too busy staying in the fishbowl that is their city and are consumed by the gang warfare that surrounds them. Gunshots are the norm. To make school like gold is my goal. I still remember the moment my teacher opened my eyes to the world of learning through reading as she placed us as a community of readers and writers in close proximity to her on the ground. We would surround her on the bright carpet where we would do our best thinking and learning. School. It was my safe haven. I actually am teaching in the same classroom where my teacher "rescued" me years ago through opening my eyes to the wonderful world of learning. School and being successful in school is what kept me out of trouble and gave me the insight in what to do to achieve my goals. "School is cool!" is my game.
