My students live in a low socioeconomic area where being in school is not really thought of as something amazing and wonderful. They are too busy staying in the fishbowl that is their city and are consumed by the gang warfare that surrounds them. Gunshots are the norm. To make school like gold is my goal. I still remember the moment my teacher opened my eyes to the world of learning through reading as she placed us as a community of readers and writers in close proximity to her on the ground. We would surround her on the bright carpet where we would do our best thinking and learning. School. It was my safe haven. I actually am teaching in the same classroom where my teacher "rescued" me years ago through opening my eyes to the wonderful world of learning. School and being successful in school is what kept me out of trouble and gave me the insight in what to do to achieve my goals. "School is cool!" is my game.
