• Hand Rehab Tools

  Volleyball has started. Setting and blocking the ball hundreds of times in practice and games is going to leave the team with more than a few sprained or jammed fingers. We already have 3 girls coming in daily to use the hand web and squeeze balls.

  One of my football players just tore a ligament in his hand and needs a way to strengthen and move his hand. The tools you provided through your donation to DonorsChoose and my classroom projects have given him the tools to get better rehab results from all of the injuries Thanks for your help and support.”

• Pens, Paper, and Tape

  Funded May 10, 2023

  At the start of every year, students turn in physical forms. Inevitably they forget to fill in one of the blanks or one of the signatures on the back. They also forget to bring a writing utensil with them. Well, now we have a cup of pens for those forgetful students to use while trying to complete their forms to participate in sports. It is a huge help for them to be able to borrow a pen and complete the forms rather than go back to the classroom, fill it out, and come back.

  We just printed our first get-to-know-you set of questions for our student athletic training program. It consists of approximately 30 questions about each of the students like "What is your favorite color?" or "What is your least favorite food?" We print each of these out, cut them, and tape them to the wall. We place two students' answers side by side and have people vote on who they think answered. At the end of the week, we move answers to the correct student and celebrate the students as we get to know each of them better. the aper and the tape make this type of activity possible.”

• Recovery After Basketball Tournaments

  Yesterday fifteen of the twenty-three visitors to the Athletic Training Facility used foam rollers as part of their warmup or recovery. Basketball was headed to the final game of the year and trying to win a playoff spot while both soccer teams were coming off good wins. The baseball catchers had sore legs from catching games on back-to-back days.

  A few of our baseball pitchers were foam-rolling their lats or sides to help with muscle soreness from pitching at the start of the season. Giving them tools to help decrease pain, and improvement of function, and reduce the risk of injury is a huge tool and something we can only afford to do because of your kindness.

• Small Weights for Incremental Gains

  DJ has had two season-ending injuries. He is working hard to get back in time to compete one final time in his high school career. We have to push him with weights to strengthen the surgically repaired body parts. We can not make 20 and 30-pound increases, but because you have given us smaller weights we can make small, as little as 5 pounds at a time, increases to help him steadily get stronger and try to reach his goal of one final game as a high school athlete.

  The gift you gave opened up a great opportunity for our athletes to return to full health. Donors like you have transformed the way we serve our student-athletes and help them stay and return to full health.”

• Snack Time Is My Favorite

  Yes, the people who support teachers through DonorsChoose decided to give these to you.

  We have the snacks in an area where students can freely grab one. Or, if they choose to, they can leave a snack for someone else. I smile each time I see a student in my class with a bag of trail mix or cheez-it because I know they feel safer. I also know that I am not alone as a teacher. I know if I needed something then I too could take a snack or leave one if I have extra.

  Since YOU have supported my classroom several other teachers in my school have joined DonorsChoose and created similar projects to help students with food needs. You are changing the opportunity for students.”

• Let's GoPro with Injury Risk Reduction and Rehb

  Funded Apr 7, 2022

  Well, the unexpected impact of having the GoPro is the fun stuff students are doing on the sidelines. They have been taking it to the football games and getting some funny Vlog-type videos.

  "Man, my feet hurt, Do your feet hurt? Do you know why our feet hurt? Because we are wearing Vans!"

  Or they run out on the field to give water with the selfie stick viewpoint. Oh, these kids kill me but I love they now have a way to capture the fun memories they are making.

  But we have already used the go pro in rehab. One of our athletes was leaning to one side while walking so we busted out the GoPro, took a video, and made some adjustments.

  We also used the camera to create some promotional material for safety training skills we use in Sports Medicine.

  Today, as I sit here writing this Thank You note the kids are using the camera to record a video of them taping blindfolded”

We have a few surgical cases that are nearing a return to play that have been using the weights and weight rack. These have allowed them to feel comfortable moving and us to help them ensure they are balanced and prepared to get back out there and get after it.

  One of our athletes played his first game this week after several months of rehab including the weights and weight rack provided through DonorsChoose. The moments when an athlete steps off the field or court after their first return to action are the ones that are the most impactful. These moments are made possible by people like you.”
