Tech Savvy: Exploring Education Through Technology
Funded Aug 5, 2019The addition of three iPads to my classroom has been great. My students are very motivated by technology, especially iPads. They view it as a reward to get to do an educational app using the iPad. In the classroom, I have introduced my students to different educational apps such as Prodigy and Freckle. My students use Prodigy to practice math skills while getting to be a wizard and fight in different battles. They are able to practice skills that they need more practice with such as counting past 20, place value, and addition. With the use of Freckle, the students can practice their reading and phonics skills. My students also use the iPad to access Google Classroom assignments and to watch educational videos on Brainpop and Brainpop Jr.
For many of my students, using the table it more accessible than using the computer. It is easier for them to log into the tablet and easier for them to type their answers. Also, there students who benefit from breaks and rewards in my classroom and the iPad is also used in that way. Getting these iPads at the beginning of the year has been a great start to this school year! My students and I are very grateful for the continued support and donations.”

This classroom project was brought to life by AT&T Foundation and 13 other donors. The Year of Magical Reading
Funded Feb 17, 2019Again, thank you so much for your generous donations and continued support for my classroom. My students and I are very grateful. For the fantasy fiction unit, my students were split into two reading groups and one group read Magic Treehouse and one group read Charlie and the Chocolate Factory. Both of the books had great elements of fantasy and engaging stories, and each book was able to fit the unique needs of my students. Throughout the unit we focused on different skills with the books such as basic comprehension, making inferences, using imagery to understand events, describing character traits and feelings, making connections, identifying conflict, and identifying cause and effect. All of the students are struggling readers and are reading below their grade level so these books were read aloud to them. They really enjoyed listening to the story and following along. Also, the books contained illustrations which my students enjoyed. We did many different activities with the books and had many engaging discussions about the books. My students really liked having their own copy of the books because they felt ownership and they had access to the materials that they see their general education peers using.”

Listen to This
Funded Nov 2, 2018Again, thank you so much for your generous donations and support for my latest Donor's Choose project. Receiving new headphones for my students has been so helpful and has made a great impact on their learning for the first half of the year. With the new headphones, my students are able to use educational websites such as Raz Kids and listen to books at their level which help them practice reading and to improve their current skills. Also, they use IXL language arts and math to practice current skills and to strengthen foundational skills. Websites such as IXL are so helpful but tend to be very text heavy at times which can be difficult for my students who are struggling readers. However, they can have the questions read to them on their computers which helps them focus more on comprehension and performing those skills instead of decoding text for that task. Also, I have a few students that like to listen to music as they complete tasks and it helps them stay motivated and the headphones have been really helpful for my students that need that accommodation in the classroom. My students love using the headphones every day and they enjoy using them to explore learning in different ways on their computers. Again, thank you so much. My students and I really appreciate your support.”

This classroom project was brought to life by Verizon and 5 other donors.A New Home for Books
Funded May 17, 2018My new bookcase was delivered this week and my students and I are so excited and grateful for this new addition to our classroom. The bookcase is beautiful and has brightened up the classroom. As I have begun to set up the classroom library, my students became very excited and kept asking when they would be allowed to read the books that were displayed on the new bookcase. The bookcase has created a space that is more inviting to my students and it encourages them to continue to explore and learn about the world around them through literature. Throughout the year I will continue to encourage my students to use this new classroom library during stations, free time, or when they finish work early. I am now better able to fully display all the books I have available to them and I can do so in an organized and inviting way. My students and I are extremely touched and humbled by the continued support and generous donations of all of our donors. Thank you again.”

If You Can Visualize It, You Can Achieve It
Funded Aug 23, 2017Thank you again for your generous donations. You have really helped our school year get off to a great start! The day that the easel was set up, my students were so excited and couldn't wait to use it. It has been so helpful to have an easel in the classroom to use during all the instruction. We use the board everyday for reading and math instruction and my students enjoy coming up to the board to share their thinking. Having a nice board seems like something so simple, but it has really made a big difference in our classroom and it will help my students continue to learn and grow this year.”

Loving to Learn
Funded Apr 30, 2017My students and I are so thankful for the new books we received with help from all the donors. So many donors shared encouragement and amazing stories that I was very touched by. Before we had these books, my students would have to read leveled books that I printed from online sources. These paper books lacked color, exciting illustrations, and engaging stories. My students did not feel motivated to read or to practice their skills. However, now that we have new books my students are motivated to read every day and to read to a friend. These books have been very helpful for me to continue guided reading lessons with books that interest and excite my students. With these books we have worked on many skills such as making inferences, answering comprehension questions, and writing responses to what we have read. During the guided reading lessons we practice reading by using echo reading, repeated reading, and independent reading. My students have expressed how much they love the new books and that they think the books are better than using their computers. These books have made such an impact on my students and it has been so great to see the joy and motivation these books have given my students.
In my classroom, my students read every day either with books at their level and by doing whole group reading lessons. The students' confidence has increased having more books available to them that are 'just right' or at their level. During whole group instruction students are able to work in small groups with other students reading at their level which gives them confidence, responsibility, and leadership opportunities. My classroom is made up of struggling readers, students who are reading 2-3 years below grade level, and they have all benefited from having more practice to improve their reading skills.
Again, we are so grateful for having this project fully funded and I look forward to seeing my students confidence and reading skills continue to grow.”
With gratitude,
Ms. Jensen
