Teaching Tolerance: Open a Book, Open a Mind
Funded Dec 3, 2019Thank you so much for donating books that focus on diversity to the media center at my school. Our students enjoy reading a wide variety of books. Having access to books about diverse characters and subjects is a great way for our students to learn about other cultures. I believe that in order to grow into responsible and caring adults, students must be exposed to cultures outside of their own. Reading books about diverse cultures and subjects is a great way to expose students to subjects they might not know a lot about.
Thanks again for your generous donation. The materials you funded will be enjoyed by many students for years to come.”

Funded Oct 4, 2019Thank you so much for funding my project and purchasing the Virtual Reality headsets for my students. Our media center is currently being renovated, and once it is open the VR headsets are going to have their own station where they can be enjoyed by students all day.
Even though the media center is not yet open, students have been using the VR headsets. All of the students who have used them have had a lot of fun with them. They really enjoy the programs that have been downloaded, and are amazed by what they see. Once the media center is up and running, students will able to come in and use the headsets for virtual fieldtrips. They will also be able to explore other programs which will give them a fun way to learn about the world. VR makes the students feel like they are right in an experience. The possibilities for learning are endless.
Thank you so much for your generous gift.”

Funded Sep 24, 2019Thank you so much for the generous donations to the media center. The media center is currently closed for renovation, and the renovation is scheduled to start soon. When I showed some students the resources that had been donated through Donors Choose they were extremely excited. The kids have so much pressure on them to succeed academically, it will fantastic for them to be able to take a breather and do some non-school activities such as jigsaw puzzles and coloring.
The students who saw the resources wanted to start using them immediately. I know that once the media center is up and running the students will get a lot of pleasure from doing the puzzles and coloring. I wouldn't be surprised if it is one of the more popular stations in the new media center.
Thanks again for donating to my project, and for giving my students a chance to unplug and unwind.”

Mrs. Reyes
Read to Succeed!
Funded Oct 10, 2018Thank you so much for donating books for our media center. The books in our media center have been used a lot, and are worn and falling apart. The new books you donated will replace many of the older ones. The book packs contained some great new titles, which students really enjoy reading. Just like other kids, our students enjoy reading contemporary works, instead of older ones they can't really relate to.
The books you donated will be cataloged into the library collection, and as a result, will be enjoyed by a large number students for many years to come. Multiple students will benefit from your generous donation.
Thanks again for your wonderful donation. It will truly impact the lives of the students in our school.”

Funded Sep 26, 2018Thank you so much for paying for the subscription to Scholastic magazines for my students. They love reading Scholastic! It always has interesting current event stories, and keeps them informed about what is happening in the world. It also has a great website which supports teaching and learning for the kids. The website has a lot of fun games on it, which the kids really enjoy playing.
Another reason that Scholastic magazine is so important to the classroom is the format. Scholastic magazine is all informational text, and all nonfiction. When students pick books to read, they often select fiction books. Scholastic exposes them to nonfiction writing, and helps with learning to read information that is not part of a fictional story.
Thank you again for your generosity. Including Scholastic magazines in my classroom has made learning a lot more fun for my students.”

Lightning Zaps Learning!
Funded Dec 21, 2017Thank you so much for funding my project. I know funding the purchase of surge protectors is not the most exciting thing, but it has truly had an impact at my school. We have a lot of lightning storms here in Florida, and our power often goes out as a result. Because we have no lightning rod, we often have power surges and equipment is damaged. By purchasing surge protectors for our school, you have ensured that computers and other electrical equipment remains safe during storms.
Keeping our computers up and running gives our students access to the technology they need for a variety of reasons. Students use the computers for district-mandated math and reading programs, but also for more exciting things like coding and designing objects to be printed on a 3D printer. In order for our students to compete with students in more affluent schools, they need to be afforded the opportunity to use technology. A lot of our students have no computers or internet access at home, so they definitely need it here at school.
Once again, thank you very much for your generous donation that ensures that all our desktops, laptops, printers (regular and 3D), and Promethean boards stay up and running.”

Funded Dec 19, 2014Thank you so much for your generous donation to my project. My students were extremely excited to each receive their own Wordly Wise book. They use them as part of their reading and language arts curriculum, and enjoy completing the exercises, the crossword puzzles, and reading the stories in the books. They often work in groups to complete the work, and this fosters a real sense of collaboration among the students.
Wordly Wise is a comprehensive program for teaching, and enriching, vocabulary. Since we have had the books, I have noticed that the students have been incorporating the words they learn from Wordly Wise into their vocabularies. This also helps them with reading as their enriched vocabularies allow them to read at higher levels.
Thank you once again for your generous donation to my students. Without your help, we never would have been able to afford to buy the materials. It is obvious to me that the Wordly Wise books have a direct impact on my students' learning.”

The Living Lynx Garden
Funded Oct 7, 2013Thank you so much for contributing to The Living Lynx Garden. Through your generous donation, our students were able to work in the garden and make the dream of growing their own plants a reality. Your donation of child-sized garden tools and gardening gloves gave our students from pre-k through fifth grade the chance to witness the wonders of nature in a hands-on learning environment. Students used the tool and gloves when they removed the grass in order to set up the beds, when they turned the soil for planting and when they dug holes to plant. Giving the students the tools to do the job gave them ownership of, and pride in, their garden. The students love the brightly colored tools and in their garden reflections, have written about how fun it was to use the tools. An additional bonus is that the tools and gloves are extremely sturdy, and will be of use in the garden for years to come.
The butterfly habitats and ladybug land that we received as part of your generous donations have also been a huge hit. Students have really enjoyed seeing the insects as they go through the four stages of the life cycle. Students as young as pre-k kept journals about the ladybugs as they went through their transformations. The ladybugs were then released into the garden in order to protect against aphids destroying the plants. Students are currently watching the butterflies in their caterpillar phase, and waiting eagerly for them to make their chrysalises. The ladybug land and the butterfly habitat are also being used as part of a greater lesson. Teachers are using these live insects to teach about the stages of the life cycle, and the role of the insects within their ecosystems.
Students have shown a great interest in, and fascination with the garden. Our students constantly ask when they can go into the garden, and have really enjoyed their time there. Giving them the opportunity to be outside, and learn in a different type of setting, has been extremely beneficial. They are more engaged in the lessons, and are asking questions that show they are thinking, not just parroting what they have heard us say. The garden is being used as a teaching tool for science, writing, and reading. Many teachers have incorporated it into their curriculums, and their students are really excited about this new addition. Without your generous donation, our garden would not be running as smoothly as it is, and our students would not have had the opportunity to learn by doing. Many of our students live in apartments, and do not have green space in which to garden. Our school garden has given them many new experiences, and will continue to give them many more as they harvest and taste what they have grown. Students will learn about healthy eating and learn how to prepare healthy and delicious meals straight from the garden. The garden will have a long-term effect on the education of our students. Thank you again for your assistance with making the garden a reality.”
