I have been teaching for 26 years in a very low socioeconomic area of Southern California. Our school is a Title I school and all the students receive free lunch, meaning that these families are living at or below the poverty line. There are many living arrangements and family structures in my class. A lot of the students have very limited to no resources available to them outside of the school environment. Most students are learning English as a second language. Even when they are faced with many challenges both at home and at school, they are enthusiastic and eager to learn.
My students are hungry for knowledge, knowledge that will prepare them for college. My students are scholars who understand the importance of hard work and trying their best to meet their goals. All the parents want the best education for their child and they try to do the best they can but they depend a lot on the the teacher and the school.
