  • Making Math Fluent

    Funded Jan 24, 2021

As we all know, this was one of the most difficult to beginnings to a school year that has ever existed. Because of COVID, most students entered the school setting significantly behind where they would typically be at the beginning of kindergarten. Because of that, it was imperative that we introduce early numeracy skills quickly and effectively.

Since we have received our materials, we begin each day with a quick number talk that allows students to build their number sense and reasoning skills. We have worked on subitizing, counting on and counting back, using doubles, using five and ten, and getting to ten -- all skills that will greatly influence their future learning and set them up for a successful transition to first grade.

Because of your generosity, my students are now excited about Math. If we happen to miss a day of this program, they are begging for it the next day. I think that is very telling, isn't it? From the bottom of my heart, thank you. Because of individuals like you, my students have a chance at success!”

    With gratitude,

    Mrs. Workman

  • Practice Makes Perfect

    Funded Oct 11, 2018

I was so thrilled to find the ETA Hand-to-Mind Daily Math Fluency program. I have been trying for years and years to engage my students during our Math talks. I spent a great deal of time gathering and preparing materials for our talks, but, despite my best efforts, I never felt like my students were benefiting. Needless to say, my Math talks prior to this year were anything but successful.

I have to admit -- when my students found out this project had been funded, they weren't exactly thrilled...at first. After all, Math talks up to that point had been pretty boring. That all changed, however, after just our first experience with the Number Strings that were provided with this program. I was quickly able to see my students' excitement grow. This is something they now look forward to each and every day. Better still, their Math fluency and ability to mentally manipulate numbers and solve various Math "problems" has improved so very very much.

Because of generous donors like you, my students now LOVE Math! Thank you for giving us access to such a fantastic resource and for giving my students the chance to be successful.”

    With gratitude,

    Mrs. Workman

  • The Perfect Spot to Learn

    Funded Oct 2, 2018

I can't even begin to tell you how important your donation was to my classroom. To say there are a number of difficult behaviors this year is a huge understatement. Because of the current dynamic of our community, we have noticed a definite increase in the number of students who display characteristics of ADHD. That's why I decided to pursue this project in the first place -- I was in desperate need of "something" to help my most difficult students find success throughout their day.

I wish you could have seen the excitement on their faces when my students received our new materials. They couldn't believe that complete strangers cared so much about them.

Unboxing everything felt a whole lot like Christmas morning! We were sure to try out our new seating right away.

The beauty of your donation is that it will impact my classroom for many years to come. These materials will serve not just my current, but also future, students. We all now have a place to learn comfortably, which will ultimately make learning much much easier. The future of these children will be better because of you. Thank you.”

    With gratitude,

    Mrs. Workman

Have you ever tried to sit at a table where you struggled to find adequate space for your legs? Have you ever been in a chair that was much too small? Have you ever had difficulty sitting still? Imagine trying to learn in such an environment. Research has shown that an uncomfortable student is one who struggles to learn. Some students need to move, wiggle, or stretch in order to find their “perfect spot to learn”. Traditional seating (desks, tables) often limits a student’s ability to perform at a level at which he/she is capable. Flexible seating options will allow students in my classroom the opportunity to find a spot that provides them with a comfortable learning experience and will enhance their learning potential. I am requesting wobble cushions, bean bags, and comfortable floor seats for students who choose to use a space beyond the traditional seating areas within my classroom. Students will be able to use these items throughout the school day.
