The students in my class bring tremendous amounts of joy to our school. Their smiles are contagious! They have significant developmental delays and are currently working on basic letter sounds in hopes of forming words and the ability to communicate their feelings and needs to other people. We attend a high poverty elementary school where a significant amount of the population does not speak English. Several of my students' parents do not speak or read English. The only exposure to English these students get is in the classroom setting. They do not go out to eat, they do not participate in extracurricular activities. The only contact they have with people other than people in their households is at school.
