By the time my students get to school at 7:45 a.m. school breakfast is over and for most of them, lunch is not until 11:45. These students often stay for after-school activities that run until 8:00 pm. When these students approach me before, during and after school for some snacks, sometimes, I am able to help them with some leftover breakfast that I’ve stashed away. Other times, when there was nothing left from breakfast, or after my desk drawer was emptied by students from my previous classes, I witness their deep sadness when I tell them I have nothing left. The next question I get from those who just start the day is:” Mister, how do you want us to learn with an empty stomach.”? They are right because many authoritative studies have shown a positive correlation between nutritious snacks and student learning. Maslow's Hierarchy of Needs, more particularly, has demonstrated how the basic human need of hunger must be met before humans can focus on more complex academic tasks.
I want to provide my students with nutrition snacks they need to start their school day, stay focused and be attentive. When students are hungry, they are distracted, off-task and unmotivated. Nutritious snacks such as Grandma's Homestyle Chocolate Chip Cookies bags, Cinnamon Toast Crunchy Cereal Bars, Nutri-Grain Cereal Bars, Minute Maid Apple Juice, and Tropicana Cranberry Juice, will enable my students to develop their academic skills with renewed energy.
Your donation to this project will give my students the “jump start" to fuel their learning.
