My goal for this project is to create a comfortable classroom where students can focus on learning. All of my students are identified with different disabilities. Some have a diagnosis of ASD, some are diagnosed with emotional/behavioral disabilities, some have specific learning disabilities, and some have intellectual disabilities. Most of my students have multiple roles in their families. Some work full time, some watch their brothers and sisters, and others have difficult home lives. For many coming to school is difficult and simply learning seems impossible to them. Regulating their emotions, attitudes, and behaviors can make it difficult to learn throughout the day.
Without emotional regulation, students are unable to establish critical relationships with their teachers and peers. Social Emotional Education is a critical component to the education of students today. Each tool I have requested will serve a purpose within my resource room. Noise cancelling earmuffs will allow for my students that are over stimulated by noise to focus. Calm stickers will be utilized on school laptops to help my anxious students manage their anxiety while in the general classroom. Liquid motion timers will be utilized for students that are currently too upset to process; the timer allows for them to focus, calm, and recenter prior to processing their emotions. The sensory rings, stress balls, stringy balls, Play-Doh compounds, poppers, and marble fidgets all assist in calming anxiety and provide objects to assist in focus. The weighted lap blanket provides a pressure that is calming for students. The bean bag and rocker chairs will allow a comfortable location for students to deescalate. The timer blocks will be utilized as a timer system when deescalating, that requires students to continuously check and reflect on their emotional status.
