“The most important thing we can do is inspire young minds and to advance the kind of science, math and technology education that will help youngsters take us to the next phase of space travel.” John Glenn, US Astronaut My students are the future scientists, engineers, mathematicians and technicians that will change our world for the better. For this project, they will design and build a water pump that can be a model for ones that NASA will take to Mars to supply astronauts with water during their long stay. Building the pumps will prime students for a future in STEM fields and open the door to life long stem learning. The materials requested, the solar panel, water pumps, and tubing are crucial to the creating the pump and mimic materials used by NASA. The other materials such as the dowels, tape and wire cutters will be used to build the structure according to certain criteria and constraints. Project presentations will be videotaped and sent to NASA as they prepare to send people to Mars. Students will be creating an authentic project that addresses a need set forth by NASA and will learn how to share and present their work. Additionally, they will be learning about solar power, something that is critical to our future. Please help me engage these middle school students in STEM learning that will open doors to their futures.
