My students are wonderful! I look forward to seeing them everyday despite the challenges we face daily. I have high expectations for all, and they rise to them. Most of my students are nonverbal and have significant sensory needs. Their sensory needs have to be addressed if learning is to take place. A rich sensory diet is key to a successful day. Sitting and attending is much easier when my kiddos have done some type of physical "work" or have had the chance to bury their hands in the sand while listening to music. Meeting sensory needs improves behavior and allows my students to be successful. It's a room in motion! Students use a picture exchange system and iPad programs to communicate. Getting to middle school without being able to express basic wants and needs has resulted in many inappropriate behaviors. My team and I work to reduce behaviors by giving students a "voice," to reduce frustration.
