iPad for Learning
Funded Oct 16, 2013"Ms. J, you have an iPad!" the students squealed when I brought it out for the first time. The students have been extremely excited about receiving our new iPad!
I am continually discovering new ways that the iPad can be used to motivate my students to learn. I've downloaded a number of learning games, particularly for math and reading, and the students were very eager to begin playing the games! Our eBookshelf is filling up, and I look forward to using the iPad with the students to do research for our New York City Over Time study, as well. I've also found that the iPad is a very helpful tool for recording and tracking students' progress throughout the year.
Overall, I've found the iPad to be a very welcome addition to our classroom resources, and I want to extend a very warm thank you to each of you for making this possible!”
With gratitude,
Ms. Jocelyn
A Well-Supplied Classroom
Funded Sep 8, 2013I'm writing again to thank each of you for your generosity towards my classroom.
The supplies provided through this project have been in use daily, ever since they arrived during the second week of school. The students use the the pencils and pens for all of their schoolwork. They use the notebooks to keep track of their mathematical thinking. They use the glue and tape for art and science projects. They use the copy paper for everything from writing stories, to doing math, to making illustrations, to completing their homework assignments. And they use the folders to keep everything organized.
I honestly can't imagine how we'd be able to function without these necessary supplies. Thank you for helping to ensure that my students and I have a "Well-Supplied Classroom!"”
With gratitude,
Ms. Jocelyn

Funded Mar 31, 2013As I reflect on the school year that just came to a close, I want to reach out and thank each of you once again for your part in supporting my students' learning.
Math has always been a very important part of my classroom instruction. On most typical schooldays we do math twice a day, once in the morning and once in the afternoon. (My students who come to me for a little extra support in our Early Morning Jump Start Program often do math three times a day!) I'm always looking for ways to make math more accessible and engaging for the children. Math games have proved to be one of the most successful ways to do that. My students are delighted to extend their mathematical knowledge during Friday Morning Math Games, and my Jump Start students race up the stairs in the mornings so they won't miss a minute of learning and playing new math games. Please take a look at the pictures I've posted to get a glimpse of how engaged the students are with this favorite element of our curriculum.
Your contributions went a long way towards making this a meaningful and successful year for my second graders, and the materials you helped purchase will be available to enhance next year's teaching, as well. Thank you again for your generous support.”
With gratitude,
Ms. Jocelyn
Get Ready to Print
Funded Oct 18, 2012I'm writing again to thank you for helping supply my classroom with ink for our Lexmark printer/copier. The Lexmark is in use constantly. On any given day, I might be printing out homework, a newsletter for families, a worksheet for a math investigation, or research materials from the Internet. I might be copying student work for a bulletin board, or creating materials for a special activity, such as our Personal Timeline project or our ongoing study of New York City Over Time. (Check back soon for photographs showing some of the students' work.)
It is so nice to know that I can always depend on the Lexmark to make high-quality copies. Thank you for helping to make that possible.”

Ms. Jocelyn
Landmarks of New York City
Funded May 13, 2012I want to say thank you once again to everyone who helped make our year-end culminating project, Landmarks of New York City, a huge success.
The students spent several weeks researching their chosen landmarks. Students used books, brochures, and the Internet to conduct their research. Several students even went with their families to visit their favorite landmarks!
Once the students had compiled their research notes, they created brochures that included pictures, maps, visitor information, history, fun facts, and more. They also used Model Magic and shoe boxes to create detailed dioramas of their landmarks. (See the pictures for some examples.)
On the day of our final celebration, students acted as "Tour Guides" for their parents, and capably demonstrated all that they had learned about these marvelous Landmarks of New York City.
Thank you so much for making this memorable, hands-on learning activity possible!”
With gratitude,
Ms. Jocelyn
Where In the World?
Funded Mar 19, 2012I'm writing again to thank you for your generous contributions towards our classroom project, Where in the World.
The students found the Flat Stanley/Flat Friend project very engaging, and were excited to hear about each Flat Friend's adventures. Some of the Flat Friends stayed close to home, and enjoyed play-dates, museum visits, and Karate classes. Other Flat Friends went site-seeing in places like Boston and Washington, D.C. A few of the Flat Friends even left the country! One traveled to England, and another had a relaxing vacation in the Dominican Republic. The students particularly enjoyed being able to locate the Flat Friends' destinations on our new globes.
Thank you for making it possible for me to do such creative educational projects in my classroom!”
With gratitude,
Ms. Jocelyn

Funded Feb 1, 2012I'm writing again to thank you for your generous donations towards the purchase of our Franklin Children's Speller + Dictionary devices. These Franklin Spellers have been in use almost every day since we received them. The students love the sense of autonomy they get by using these devices independently to revise their spelling. The students are also taking more pride in their written work, now that they know that they are using more accurate spelling. I appreciate how motivated the students have become about making revisions in their work. Many of my students have also discovered that they can use the Dictionary function to help them define words they encounter while reading.
Here are some quotes from my students, explaining why they like working with the Franklin Children's Speller + Dictionary devices:
"When you use the Franklin Spellers, it helps readers read your writing."
"You can enter the letters you think, and it will tell you the real letters."
"It's helpful for telling what words mean."
The Franklin Children's Speller + Dictionary devices have been a welcome addition in my classroom. My students and I truly appreciate your generosity.”
With gratitude,
Ms. Jocelyn
