I am transitioning from a Montessori classroom to a traditional inner-city public school. I would like my environment to be as inviting and home like for these children as possible. Many young children do not receive the appropriate amounts of sensory input and a traditional classroom environment with desks in rows does not meet the needs of these children. I would like to provide my students with the tools they need to sooth their sensory needs so they can focus on learning. These tools would allow for optional seating, control of auditory needs, kinesthetic and fine motor development, and pleasing visual stimuli. I am requesting active chairs to give students choice in where they sit but also to provide children who need to move a place where they can move and not distract others. The lap tables are to provide a hard writing surface for those who choose to sit on the floor. The Sensory weighted lap pad is not just for students with special needs but is a great way to help soothe any child who might feel out of sorts. The ear muffs help reduce noise for those who struggle to stay concentrated due to auditory distractions especially since I plan on playing soothing music during work time. The fidget toys will be available to help calm students or to help students remain focused. It is also important that students feel a sense of ownership over their classroom, this is why we need the vacuum and feather dusters, so students can participate in the care of their environment.
