  • Aloha Ukulele Class

    Funded Dec 22, 2020

    Thank you so much for your generous donations. It meant the world to me and opened the door to new worlds for my students. They were so excited as I ordered ukuleles of every color of the rainbow.

    Each student was able to use a ukulele without having to disrupt their learning by having to share an instrument. They not only learned the history of the ukulele but learned and performed several songs including Hakuna Matata, How Far I'll Go, Somewhere Over the Rainbow, the Lava Song and their all time favorite There's a Hole in the Bucket. (Only because they were annoyed by the ending)

    As you know the school year was disrupted by the pandemic. However, I taught from home. This was a rough year. I am forever grateful.”

  • Black Belt is Not a Destination But a Journey

    Students have been learning recorders as part of their Google Classroom schedule. We have Zoom classes every Friday consisting of the entire third grade class. Most days there are 60 to 90 participants. Every week several students are chosen to help teach the class. We use break out rooms to practice our skills and to give feedback.

    Students look forward to class each week. There are always new skills to learn. They earn virtual certificates and karate belts for their achievements.

  • Clipboards Add Support to Student Achievement

    Thank you for giving us the support we needed. The matching set of clipboards has been instrumental in allowing students the freedom to move around the classroom while giving each other feedback. They (and I) were absolutely elated. There was an immediate mad dash to the clipboard box. It took students a few class periods to realize that they no longer needed to find a surface to write on and once I reminded them about the clipboards the excitement started all over again. I've pasted pictures of superhero symbols on the clipboards and everyone wants their favorite. I smile everyday at the difference it has made.”

  • Headphones Help Students Hone Skills

    Funded Nov 13, 2013

    Thank you so much for your generous donation. The head phones are used every day by approximately 100 students. Children in grades Kindergarten through second grade use the headphones to listen to themselves practice playing songs from Mary Had a Little Lamb to Ode To Joy. Students no longer have to compete for a keyboard that has working headphones and I no longer have to buy cheap ones every month at the dollar store. One student commented, "I can hear myself so good, I can play with my eyes closed!" That was music to MY ears.

Our school has two dual language programs (French and Spanish) as well as students who speak Japanese and Amharic, so listening is an important skill for students as well as teachers. Our students enjoy helping each other and working together. In music class they work in pairs or small groups helping each other meet their goals. Students learn early on that it's O.K. To ask for help whether from a teacher or from a peer.
