  • Just Garden!

    Funded Mar 26, 2025

Thank you for supporting public education, my students, and my own passion for passing on the love of gardening. Your donation will help our Gardening and Greenhouse Club be more successful, learn about sustainable agriculture, and bring nature and beauty to our school's campus. We would not be able to do this without wonderful people like you.”

    With gratitude,

    Mr. Chau

  • Filters for Fishies

    Funded Nov 13, 2024

Thank you so much for your generous donations. Anyone who has kept aquarium fish knows that canister filters are the best because they contain so much volume for filter media and beneficial bacteria. And Eheim, engineered in Germany, makes the most reliable canister filters.

With our donated filters, we are more able to keep our fish and aquatic turtles in prime condition, in water with no traces of nitrates or nitrates. Furthermore, besides filtering the water of unwanted organics, the filters create flow and turbulence at the surface, allowing for gas exchange.

My students are very grateful to have such dependable and "professional" filters for their classroom fish tanks, and our aquarium club is thriving because of your help.”

  • Books for Life

    Funded May 15, 2024

Thank you so much for donating so generously to my book project. As a Chicago Public School with a limited budget, we can provide books to our students, but they cannot write in them or keep them. Oftentimes, the paperbacks (we cannot afford to purchase hardcover texts) are ragged, missing covers, or DO have someone else's annotations already in the margins (scofflaws!).

Having brand-new paperbacks that students can read during the semester and then keep in their personal libraries will teach my students the ideas of reading a text more than once, perhaps playing forward by lending the book to a friend or family member, and also collecting books to treasure.”

    With gratitude,

    Mr. Chau

  • Clean Water Means Happy Fish

    Funded Nov 22, 2023

Thank you so much for your kindness and continued support of pubic education. With your donation, we were able to purchase an amazing new filter that will be sure to keep the water our 300-gallon "pond" pristine. The students have been very impressed by this piece of technology, which our own school budget could have never allowed us to acquire. Since installing the filter, the turtle has become more lively, and we can actually see through to the bottom of the pond, allowing students to witness the breeding behavior of our meso-american cichlids.”

  • A (few) Trees Grow in our Atrium

    Funded Nov 8, 2023

Thank you so much for your kindness and continued support of public education. With your generous donations, we were able to purchase MANY much-needed planters for our larger plants and trees. The Gardening Club and Greenhouse Seminar will continue to work on beautifying our campus and bringing these natural air filters into our common spaces. My students were gobsmacked by the largest planter we acquired, a massive 33" planter that holds about 120 gallons of soil! It is the new home for our donated grapefruit tree, joining the other trees in our atrium.”

  • Jumping Into the New Year

    Funded Jan 30, 2023

Thank you so much for your generosity! Our jump boxes have proven invaluable for our plyometric conditioning, drills, and even for impromptu ref stands. We had an incredible season thanks to you and reached the Sweet 16 of Illinois, something we would not have predicted for this season.

The students really appreciate adding to our program's inventory of equipment used for helping them become stronger and better jumpers, a really important aspect of volleyball. These boxes will be useful to us for many seasons to come.”

    With gratitude,

    Mr. Chau

  • Adding Beauty to Brains

    Funded Sep 6, 2022

Thank you for your tremendous generosity. We were able to purchase over 1000 premium bulbs to plant around our school grounds. Students worked really hard to double dig our garden beds, amend the soil with compost and bone meal, and plant all the bulbs at their required depths. They've been really excited as our tulips have bloomed and are waiting anxiously for the lilies to push through.

This has been a really rewarding project for the students, combining physical labor, research, and beauty. If you are local, please come and see for yourselves!”

  • German Wheel in America!

    Funded Nov 30, 2022

Thank you so much for donating to our German Wheel project. With this new wheel on campus, we can begin building an inventory that will allow us to host wheel gymnastics without the hassle of transporting wheels from outside organizations on days we have the class.

The students are very excited about this brand new wheel--it is so white and has not been scratched by asphalt or concrete. Moreover, because it is new, putting it together is also much easier than the older wheels.

We look forward to building on this gymnastics program for years to come.”

  • A Book in the Hand is Better Than...

    Funded Nov 30, 2022

Thank you so much for your generosity! For book lovers, nothing really compares to the heft, feel, and smell of ACTUAL books. Our students are putting their paperback copies of King Lear to good use in small group discussion, during presentations, and when acting out the scenes.

With Shakespeare, having books is even more important because our students are learning how to annotate, ask questions, and paraphrase more difficult passages in the margins. When assigned to parts, they can highlight their lines to facilitate acting out the play.”

    With gratitude,

    Mr. Chau

I teach at a Chicago public school. Because my school is a selective-enrollment high school, students come from diverse neighborhoods in Chicago. When you give to my project, you are helping to enhance the education of very driven students who have worked extremely hard to be accepted. Upon arrival, they continue this level of excellence, so any diversion from the standard curriculum is welcomed.
