As a former middle school student who hated reading textbooks and other literature that was 50+ years old... I am hoping to add resources to my classroom that will help change my students' views on reading. I want my students to read books that not only connect to their lives, but also motivate them to use their voices and ideas to make positive impacts within our community. Historically and still today, people are restricted from reading certain types of literature or have limited access to quality reading materials that enhance higher order thinking, problem solving and intrapersonal skills. Middle school is a critical age for students to either invest themselves in their education, which will set them up for a successful future or they will completely lose interest. While our school library has the same 7th grade class sets that my parents probably read (not to minimize some of the great classics), but I want to push my students to think about the problems of today to encourage their thinking about the future impact they can make. Ultimately, the reading materials I would like to purchase for my class are books that incorporate present day social issues. The books will be a part of a social issue unit I'm creating. Students will be reading different books based on interests in their literature circle groups. Throughout the unit, they will not only work towards meeting the 7th Grade Common Core literature standards, but will also be writing responses to literature as well as a larger argumentative essay using evidence from their social issue book and their own investigative research.
