For the first time in my teaching career, I’ve decided to ask for donations for my Secondary ELA classroom. Anyone who knows me will tell you that long before Pinterest all of my classrooms were designed to engage my students. A Hygee classroom has been my charge since 2003 and I was creating these types of spaces long before it became a fad. Consequently, I have been collecting and gathering culturally relevant reading and writing material since my first year of teaching. When I took a brief leave In 2016, many of my teaching and young adult books, furniture pieces, and student materials were given away by the school.
I teach in the community where my parents raised me, where I was educated and where I began my teaching career: I feel my students deserve more than what they're receiving. For the reasons I mentioned above, I've asked for culturally relevant books such as Yummy, a graphic novel by G Neari, to engage my male students. Getting boys to read can feel like a daunting task, but the right books can make that task feel attainable. Donors will see that there are many graphic novels and culturally relevant books in my cart. The Imprevo, the interactive whiteboard, will be used to convert my lifeless whiteboards into a tool that my students can use to learn how to do meaningful annotations on. I don't have smart board technology, so this technology will turn my regular white boards into smart boards. With the interactive whiteboard, I can help struggling readers and writers learn to annotate. Annotating and close reading is a skill that my students will need beyond the walls of my classroom. Learning to read well closely is a must for college bound and career readiness.
