  • Healthier Snack Options! v2.0

    Funded Mar 25, 2025

Holy Moly! This project was fully funded in just under 2 hours! Thank you for helping make this happen and ensuring we have food for students as soon as possible. I look forward to restocking my snacks and lunch supply. There's nothing quite like the expression on a teenager's face when you give them food as a gift.”

  • Healthier Snack Options!

    Funded Sep 18, 2024

My students have been so appreciative of the snacks you helped provide to them. On the first reveal of the snacks in advisory one student said, "Wow, Jamie. You've changed." Over the last few weeks students have stopped by my desk throughout the day looking for food. Word has gotten around and several of my colleagues also used Donorschoose to provide snacks for students. Providing easily accessible snacks and lunches has helped students be in class on time rather than out waiting in line for food during lunch rush hour. Some students even appear more focused and engaged. There's nothing quite like the expression on a teenager's face when you give them food as a gift.”

  • Pickleball With my Students

    Funded Jul 4, 2024

Over the last 8 weeks our school launched Clubs during advisory where students chose activities of interest to them. I had a small group of newbie pickleballers. On the first day, it rained so we worked together to set up the nets in a classroom and hit around some foam balls. They were overconfident in their ability to understand the rules and scorekeeping and when I explained how to keep score they lost their minds. Pickleball is complicated! Overall, students had a great time goofing around and hitting in the park. We'll be venturing back out in the Spring and we'll see if things get more competitive as they absorb the rules and skills. It's been a blast so far.

Thank you again for your support in bringing this project to life.”

  • Developing Literacy Through "Wild" by Cheryl Strayed

    Funded Sep 15, 2014

Thank you again for your generous donation to my classroom. My students thoroughly enjoyed reading "Wild". Students were given two different options for their final project. Some students chose to write their own memoirs about a particularly challenging moment in their lives. Some students wrote literary essays where they analyzed "Wild", compared "Wild" to Bill Bryson's "A Walk in the Woods" and drew connections between the story and their own personal experiences.

Students created art depicting their own metaphorical backpacks and all the things they carry with them and a free bin of all the things weighing them down that they would like to get rid of.

My students were fortunate enough to take a field trip to REI where they got a tour of the store and demonstrations on specific gear. We held class outside in honor of Cheryl Strayed's story.

These books not only helped to create a meaningful experience for my students but also helped me continue to grow and develop as a teacher.”

  • Outdoor Adventure for Inner-City Youth

    Funded Mar 25, 2014

Thank you once again for your contribution to this trip for my students. The students had a great time. They experienced the outdoors in a way that many never had before. They saw stars for the first time and cooked their meals over a fire. They went on a night hike in the woods and learned about nocturnal creatures and how the human eye adjusts to light and dark. They climbed obstacles they never thought they'd be able to climb and made it to the top, supporting each other along the way. Most of all, they learned about each other and created bonds with people they never thought they would be close with. All of these wonderful experiences would not have been possible without your generosity. My students thank you for that.”

  • Lord of the Flies For My Students

    Funded Feb 18, 2014

Thank you for your generous donation to my students and my classroom. I am so excited to share this great piece of literature with my students. Some students have already broken into the box of books and began reading the book independently. Some students when they saw the books, told me how much they enjoyed reading the story in the past. It was wonderful to see students enthusiastic about literature and able to discuss it. This is not always the case. I am so grateful to you for providing my students and I the opportunity to engage in this text together. It's amazing to already see a love of literature developing in students who struggle with their literacy skills. All thanks to you, your kindness, and your support.”

  • Metamorphosis For My Students!

    Funded Jan 4, 2010

Thank you again for your donation to help supply my students with The Metamorphosis. My co-teacher and I were able to use the books in our 12th grade English class and it was a big hit.

Our class contains students with various reading levels ranging from 4th grade to 12th grade so it was wonderful to see every student understanding the story. We were able to create fun and engaging lessons where they compared themselves to bugs and thought about what life would be like for them if they woke up one morning transformed.

I look forward to continuing to use the books in the future and I thank you for your generous contribution to my students. ”

    With gratitude,

I teach high school Special Education, English, Social Studies, and a class about horror movies at an alternative transfer school in New York City. My students are 16-22 and have attended at least one other high school before they found us. As one student described it, it is a "refugee camp for people traumatized by high school." I hope to help them recover from that experience and graduate from high school. If you'd like to donate please be sure to use any matching codes currently offered to have your donation doubled. Thanks for your support!
