As a preschool teacher in an inner city school most of my students have little to no knowledge about letters or how to read. Many of my students have never been in a school setting before and this is their first time being away from their family for several hours. At the beginning of the school year many of my students do not even speak English which makes it even more challenging teaching them how to read. Some of my students start off speaking no English and are terrified for days or even weeks as they are now being left with strangers to face the unknown on their own. However, when they do succeed it makes the job even more rewarding. By the end of the year they speak English and can read with confidence.
