My students are scholars, athletes, musicians, actors, and artists. They are typically the first in their families to plan to attend college. They live in and around a major city on the east coast. Many of them are first generation US citizens. English may not be their first language, but by the time they get to me they have a solid grasp of it. Most of my students are African American. My students are driven to succeed. They are not lazy and want a better life than they see being lived by those around them. They are trying to stay above the influence of gangs and drugs. They may be late for school because they have to care for a sibling in the morning, or because the metro bus stops here after school begins. They probably don't have a pencil, but that's ok because I always collect forgotten ones off of the floor and desks in the afternoon. My students are the future, and the future is bright.
