Have you ever been exposed to fiberglass or had a rock in your shoe? Have you ever felt like you had so much energy that you had to exercise just to feel calm enough to sit still? Many of my students experience this type of sensory assault 24/7. Imagine trying to learn under those conditions. Children with sensory processing disorder frequently experience problems with their sense of touch, smell, hearing, taste and/or sight. Along with this, my students often experience difficulties in movement, coordination and sensing where one's body is in a given space. This is a common disorder for individuals with neurological conditions such as an autism spectrum disorder. I'm requesting a variety of sensory therapy implements to help alleviate the discomfort my students feel every day. The items I have requested include noise cancelling headphones, flexible seating, weighted blankets, and blackout curtains. These will be used by my students for deep pressure and tactile experiences, as well as to help eliminate overwhelming sensory input. With these sensory materials, my students will be able to be more independent in calming their bodies. With calmer bodies, the students will be able to focus on the academic and self-help skills that they are learning. Please help me to help them achieve a comfort level that we all take for granted, and eliminate their sensory dysfunction.
