The Mexican American author Gary Soto draws on his own experience of growing up in California’s Central Valley in this finely crafted collection of eleven short stories that reveal big themes in the small events of daily life. Students will make connection through a variety of engaging themes to their personal lives creating a well rounded individual. I plan to use this book to create a learning environment that promotes positive relationships among peers. This novel is a very engaging book that will help even the most reluctant readers enjoy reading and help the students understand theme and how it connects to their everyday life.
