Summer Reading: the Perfect Way to Learn & Grow!
Funded Jun 10, 2024The students love to see new books in the library. It was a special treat during our summer school.
These selections were curated by the Association for Library Service to Children (ALSC) to provide the opportunity for individual and shared reading as well as participation in our summer reading program.
These stories will benefit students by providing access to quality literature and promoting reading as a life-long pleasure.
There are so many benefits to summer reading; expanding vocabulary, encouraging social-emotional learning, improving focus and concentration, and keeping the brain active. In addition, summer reading programs help children make reading a permanent part of their daily routine.
Thank you again for your donations.”

Funded Dec 4, 2024Thank you so much for funding this project. The kids will be so excited to have a special place to read in the library. Our furniture is quite dated, and we currently have no soft places for independent reading.
I cannot wait to see their faces when they see a bright new carpet and seating, along with a tent.
I might have to start a reservation list!”

STEAM Ahead !
Funded May 24, 2024Thank you again for supporting our project "STEAM Ahead!," which provided a variety of resources for our students.
Every time we use them the students get so excited. We set up stations for groups to rotate through. We have basic instruction or build ideas that correlate to our theme or story. It provides open-ended learning and creativity.
The small groups work together to accomplish their goal and they are proud to share and talk about their creations with others. They are enthusiastic to start a new project.”

Funded Mar 28, 2024Thank you so much for your donation to our "Stem for Success...Connect, Collaborate, Create" project. Our students love learning with this technology.
Osmo is a game system used with iPads. It uses a mirror on the iPad's front-facing camera so that the app can see what is in front of the iPad. The benefits include hands on learning, collaboration between students, and promotion of critical thinking skills.
We now have a variety of early learning games that allow the students to work together. They love iPads no matter what, but these games are novel to them, so it is exciting each time we "play."
Students on the spectrum often find success the fastest with this tool. It is wonderful to see. The combination of tactile plus technology seems to be the key.”

Funded Feb 13, 2024The students were so excited to see all our new selections.
This donation allowed our 4th and 5th grade readers to participate in their first Battle of the Books competition in over 3 years. It was so helpful to have multiple copies of titles to practice for the contest. While they did not win, they had a fun adventure where they shared their reading experiences with students from across the city. A special thank you to our specialists and administrative team for supporting this event.
In the media center, we share a different Readers' Choice book every week. When we have finished at least four books, the students will vote on their favorite story. They love listening to the different books and talking about them and they race to check out a copy. They often ask to hear the same story again. I think "Are You a Cheeseburger?" might be a contender!
Another wonderful thing is the way the students share their opinions and reflect on the various books. They are learning about cooperation, compassion, compromise, and more. The fact that this is schoolwide, and we will share our votes with all of Virginia is an added incentive. Thank you again for your donations.”

Dash To It! Robots Needed for Authentic STEM Learning Experiences
Funded Nov 29, 2023Our kindergarten and first grade students are just getting to know our new Dash robots. The excitement that Dash has brought to the library and our students has been amazing! They are thrilled to see their coding come to life as Dash moves, talks, and lights up. In fact, the noise level has been a bit high as they squeal each time something new works but, that kind of noise is inspiring!
The thing that is so remarkable about coding and technology is the opportunity for different students to shine and show off new talents. Also, students who have special needs or behavioral issues are so engaged that classroom management is easy. Technology also requires a lot of collaboration and cooperation, so they work together to complete their tasks.
The best part is the students always ask, "When are we going to use the robots again?".”

Funded May 6, 2019As you can see from the photos, our students have been using the Spheros in a variety of ways. This project allowed more students access to materials at one time and they really put their own "spin" on things. The Bolts are definitely a favorite with the class - the new features including the programmable matrix encourage even more creativity.
My Innovations class was challenged with creating obstacle courses for their Spheros that included a story. They were so engaged in every step of the design process that our two-day activity extended over a week. Many groups were even working in the hallway to the delight of our principal. The students not only had fun, but they were collaborating, coding, and engineering!
There are so many ways to use the Spheros and the best part is the students always ask, "When are we going to use them again?".”
