I'm a firm believer in keeping the focus on what's really important: my scholars. Student motivation, engagement, and success are incredibly important to me. However, successfully engaging and motivating 21st Century learners isn't easy. As students' learning styles change, we as teachers must adapt right along with our students in our classrooms. In an excellent blog on student engagement by Kayla Delzer, she writes, "Outside the windows of our classroom is a dynamic, fast-paced, and ever-changing world full of choices. Our classroom environments should be conducive to open collaboration, communication, creativity, and critical thinking. This simply cannot be done when kids are sitting in rows of desks all day." In my opinion, students will inevitably become more engaged when learning takes place in a flexible seating classroom! So what is flexible seating? Flexible seating classrooms give students a choice in what kind of learning space works best for them, and help them to work collaboratively, communicate, and engage in critical thinking. It gives students a choice in how they learn. Research states that immediate benefits of flexible seating include (but are not limited to) burning more calories, using up excess energy, improving metabolism, increased motivation and engagement, creating a better oxygen flow to the brain, and improving core strength and posture. I'm redesigning my classroom, on a budget, and hope to incorporate flexible seating, i.e. hokki stools, core disks, standing tables, carpet and yoga mats, stability balls or crate seats. In doing so, I hope for a high rate of student success and motivation! Please kindly consider supporting this positive classroom change.
