My students attend a Title 1 school in a high impoverished area. All of my students receive free breakfast and lunch. I have 26 wonderful 6th graders that come into school daily, eager to learn. Last year, when I taught 5th grade, only one of my students were on level with reading. By the end of the school year my class finished with 11 students on target. More students would've reached their target if we didn't have to share 26 Chromebooks between 84 students, which also hindered the time they had to learn more about coding through the Tynker coding for kids resource. This resulted in me making the decision to loop with my children to the 6th grade because I know what they need. I truly believe that every student in my room should have access to a laptop or tablet without having to wait days to gain access to the internet. With Chromebooks, I will be able to implement three powerful resources to enhance student writing, reading and speaking skills: Mylexia, student online writing, and the studio of tools offered through Google Docs and Google classroom. These three foundations will better prepare my students not only for the real world and the future, but give them myriad platforms to grow, cultivate and project their voices into our global society.
