  • 4th Grade Science Should Be Engaging and Hands-On!

    Funded Aug 11, 2022

Thank you so much for donating to my "4th Grade Science Should be Engaging and Hands-On" project! This has been a great addition to my Science lessons. With these lessons, students are able to work collaboratively and be hands-on with the different 4th grade Science concepts. Instead of just reading about science topics, they are actually getting involved and experiencing how science works! This Science curriculum has also been great for the students to actually see how science is part of our everyday world. I thank you again for helping bring this into my classroom!”

    With gratitude,

    Mrs. Robinette

  • We Can Have Fun Without Technology!

    Funded May 26, 2022

Every week, students in my grade level have WIGs (Wildly Important Goals) that they work towards. There is always two ELA goals and two Math goals for them to accomplish by Friday. If they achieve all of their goals, they get to participate in Fun Friday. There are a variety of activities that happen during this time, but playing games without technology is one of their favorites! We are able to achieve a no technology time because of this Donor's Choose project. Students are able to interact with their peers and play board games and card games. Some of them have never played a game that's not on a device, and it is really interesting to watch how the students interact with each other and with the different games. I also love to get involved with the students. Some of our favorites to play our Spoons, Taco Cat Goat Cheese Pizza, and Sorry!

When my students saw all the new games, they couldn't wait to start playing them! We did have a brief discussion about where they came from and why it is important to take good care of them. It was so great to hear them talking about which ones they had played before, which ones were their favorites, etc. I love hearing that some of them still have family game nights and love to beat their older sister in Checkers!

As the year goes on, I hope that the students will continue to love playing the games. It is so nice to get them off devices, even if it is only for 45 minutes. It is also an opportunity for them to interact with their peers in a different way. So many of them are lacking social skills and missed out on peer interactions over the last two years. I truly hope they gain more than just game time during this meaningful time in my classroom.

Thank you again for your generous donation to my classroom!”

    With gratitude,

    Mrs. Robinette

  • Success Starts with Storyworks!

    Funded Aug 13, 2021

Storyworks magazines have been a huge asset to my 4th grade classroom this year. My students have access to various books through our classroom and school library. They also have access to text copied in black and white from textbooks and various reading websites. The Storyworks magazines are so popular in my classroom because they are in color and full or short articles that are engaging to my students. My students really enjoy the nonfiction articles because they are written by a well-known author, Lauren Tarshis, and several of them enjoy reading her I Survived series. They also enjoy the other texts because their content is relevant to their own lives.

Storyworks has helped me teach skills and lessons in a new way this year. Since the passages are designed with a core skill, as well as a variety of other subskills, I am able to choose which passages will work for my weekly skill. I start the lessons with an introduction to the story and a preview of the vocabulary. We then read through the story as a first read. We do not worry about any specific skill, just read to get familiar with the text. After students have done a first read, they do a second and third read with a skill focus and a purpose for reading. The students do a close read, and answer the questions embedded in the text on post-it notes. We then come back together and discuss their answers to the questions. This really helps the students understand what they are reading, and it really helps push my struggling readers to comprehend a more difficult text. I then access the resources on the Storyworks website and use them for guided practice and assessments. The resources are great because they are full of higher-level thinking questions and are great practice for future standardized testing. Storyworks has also been a great addition to the resources that are already available in my classroom. Since it is full of great texts, I am able to integrate Storyworks with other required resources.

I really want to thank Donor's Choose and my project donors for giving me the opportunity to provide rich and engaging reading for my students. I look forward to receiving more magazines this year, and I know my students are also eager to get the next issue!”

    With gratitude,

    Mrs. Robinette

Storyworks is a Scholastic magazine that ignites a sense of wonder and a spark of curiosity in readers. In each issue of Storyworks, there is a variety of genres, including nonfiction, fiction, drama, poetry, etc. The 32 page magazine is filled with text that engages and excites students. It is so much more appealing than just using a textbook or text copied from the school copier. Storyworks is an amazing resource to meet all reading levels of students in my classroom! There are a variety of differentiation tools to help struggling readers and English Language Learners. On the online component of Storyworks, there are articles at different reading levels, audio versions, and "Behind the Scenes" videos to build background knowledge on the topics of the articles in the magazine. There is also access to scaffolded lessons and project-based activities as another way to help reach all learners, no matter their reading abilities. Another fascinating feature of Storyworks is its ability to help students become lifelong learners and excel in their reading skills. For every article in the magazine, there are critical thinking questions and activities that focus on ELA skills to build reading, writing, and test-taking confidence. The articles also integrate science and social studies topics. Through Storyworks, each student will be able to make connections, find articles that interest them, and work towards becoming lifelong readers!
