My students are being tasked with cross-curricular a design challenge. They will need to create a 3D and virtual walkthrough of a hospital room to be used for simulated clinical exposure/experiences for our students in the Biomedical Sciences Pathway. My Engineering students will use the design process to create a balanced solution to the design challenge. They will be required to use industry tools to design and model the hospital room. We use Autodesk Revit and Inventor to design and model the hospital room and its elements in accordance with the needs of our clients and the criteria and constraints for the project. This project will require students to use Oculus Rift VR systems in order to create a virtual walkthrough of the spaces they create in the software programs. In addition to detailed blueprints, the VR walkthrough will allow students to foresee potential design flaws before using time and resources in the prototyping stage of the design process. The Oculus Rift VR systems will allow my students to have some exposure to the technology used in the Engineering and Architectural fields. Using an interdisciplinary approach, our students will learn about the design process as well as the needs of a clinician and other healthcare providers and the comfort of a patient in a hospital setting.
