I often play ukulele as a teaching tool in my classes and many students have said that they'd like to learn to play, too. Instruments are a great way to engage students as they're learning various musical skills. They will learn about chords and harmony, build dexterity as their skills improve, and apply those skills to many kinds of music from different eras. Adding ukuleles to my classroom will provide fantastic opportunities for making music. My students in grades 4 and 5 will use the instruments in their general music classes in a special ukulele unit. Additionally, the instruments will help provide after-school enrichment opportunities through the addition of a Ukulele Club. My ultimate goal is to have enough ukuleles so that each student in a class has an instrument to play. These 14 instruments will be a great start toward that goal and is enough instruments for two students to share. Because these instruments will last for many years, they will touch the lives of hundreds of students passing through my doors.
