Funded Feb 17, 2012I am so proud to be able to share the fruits of our efforts with you all, as we would not have accomplished these tasks were it not for your kindness and generosity. My fourth grade scholars utilized their new HP laptop computer (compliments of you!) to conduct research about our home state, California. Students then applied their research results to create multiple projects, including California Native Brochures and California Regional Postcards.
Students researched four major California Native tribes: the Mojave, the Chumash, the Miwok, and the Yurok. They learned about each of the tribes' abilities to use their natural resources for survival; including how they erected their homes, the foods they ate and the tools they created to hunt and gather those foods, as well as information about their customs, traditions and beliefs. The students then applied their research to create brochures one might find at a Native American visitors' center.
The other project displayed on this website was created using research information the students gathered online about the different regions of California. The students studied landforms, climate, industry and tourism on the coast, in the mountains, in the central valley and in the desert areas of California. They then composed postcards to friends and family, virtually taking them on a field trip to each of the four regions-- based solely on their research.
The students really enjoyed putting these projects together. Not only was it a welcome departure from their dry textbooks, it also honed their research skills and broadened their familiarity with technology. We cannot thank you enough!”
With gratitude,
Ms. Elliott
