  • Ms. Elliott's Descent Into Distance Education

    Funded Aug 11, 2020

I cannot thank you enough for your generous contributions! My new MacBook Pro laptop has helped us transition into a comprehensive distance learning program, and each of my students is benefitting greatly! It has the capacity to support the programs we need for daily instruction, such as Zoom, Schoology and Clever, without becoming bogged down or causing a lag, which really helps to keep the class flowing and the students engaged.

I am able to use the laptop simultaneously with a second device, enabling me to screen share the lesson content, while keeping a close eye on my students in the Zoom gallery. This enables me to answer questions in the moment, manage whole group discussions, and utilize the various apps (like Nearpod) within our course. I am also able to utilize the laptop to manage a small group of students who require additional help in a break-out room, while the rest of the class is visible to me in the main zoom session.

These are just a few examples of how your donations have supported my daily instruction and I am so very grateful to each and every one of you!!! A million thank yous and warm, fuzzy hugs!!! XOXO”

    With gratitude,

    Ms. Elliott

  • California History: A Visual Landscape

    Funded Feb 17, 2012

I am so proud to be able to share the fruits of our efforts with you all, as we would not have accomplished these tasks were it not for your kindness and generosity. My fourth grade scholars utilized their new HP laptop computer (compliments of you!) to conduct research about our home state, California. Students then applied their research results to create multiple projects, including California Native Brochures and California Regional Postcards.

Students researched four major California Native tribes: the Mojave, the Chumash, the Miwok, and the Yurok. They learned about each of the tribes' abilities to use their natural resources for survival; including how they erected their homes, the foods they ate and the tools they created to hunt and gather those foods, as well as information about their customs, traditions and beliefs. The students then applied their research to create brochures one might find at a Native American visitors' center.

The other project displayed on this website was created using research information the students gathered online about the different regions of California. The students studied landforms, climate, industry and tourism on the coast, in the mountains, in the central valley and in the desert areas of California. They then composed postcards to friends and family, virtually taking them on a field trip to each of the four regions-- based solely on their research.

The students really enjoyed putting these projects together. Not only was it a welcome departure from their dry textbooks, it also honed their research skills and broadened their familiarity with technology. We cannot thank you enough!”

    With gratitude,

    Ms. Elliott
