My students will be exploring identity and intersectionality through reading The Hate U Give. They will be putting themselves in Starr's shoes, walk through their own and other peoples experiences, growing in empathy and compassion. Students will begin to define what shapes their identities and relate how identity has many characteristics and affects relationships within the school building and classroom. One of the major issues that we encounter in teaching and developing relationships with our students is the lack of self-awareness or self-identity. Students quite frequently demonstrate a complete lack of confidence in ideas, thoughts, feelings, and self-concepts. This project will support the healthy development of self-awareness and recognition of value and self-worth, even through our academic subjects. Students will be asked: What is identity? Are humans responsible for their own actions? Is human suffering inevitable? What is love? What is hate? Why do people love/hate? What choices do we make about our own identities? How can our choices influence how others see us? How can our choices influence how we understand ourselves? What is double consciousness? What does it mean to code switch? Why do people code switch? How does Starr code switch? Why does she feel the need to code switch? How does experiencing double consciousness influence the development of one’s identity? Who is Williamson Starr? Who is Garden Heights Starr? Why can’t G.H. Starr reveal her identity at Williamson and vice versa? Is there such a thing as “talking white”/”talking black”? Does your behavior speak for your race?
