My students love math! In third grade there are a lot of new and challenging math concepts that students are introduced to, including multiplication, division, and fractions. My students take on the new challenges and work hard to figure them out. We have math workbooks and whiteboards to show their learning during math, but what they really need is a way to see the math come to life in front of them. Manipulatives can help students make sense of the numbers and concepts in a real and hands-on way. Many of my students need this kinesthetic and visual learning in order for them to retain and understand the information. Not only will the manipulatives help the students with learning, but it will also help with teamwork in our classroom as well. When students are able to work together and use the manipulatives to solve problems, they are able to learn from each other. During our math workshop everyday, students play hands-on games with each other to practice the concepts we are learning. Having more variety in our manipulatives will help them be able to play more hands-on games together. By donating to our project, you will put these learning materials directly into their hands! Students will be able to use the place value blocks to understand addition and subtraction and how to borrow and regroup. Students will use the counters and unifix cubes in almost all areas especially multiplication and division in order to make equal groups. The magnetic math manipulatives will be used during whole class instruction so they can follow along with the new learning. Fractions will come to life with dominoes and the math dice can be used to play many different math learning games. My students will love math even more with these items.
