Math is often the class students like the least. When asked why, students often respond "I'm just not good at it." In reality, the reason students don't like it is because they haven't been able to access it. We have been working together, teacher and students, to make math more engaging by allowing students to voice what kinds of activities they like. Students like to move around, to be competitive and to access real-world tasks. The materials I've requested will help students to access and engage in math in ways they haven't before. With buzzers, students can engage in competitive activities for review. Number cubes and spinners help to create authentic probability experiences, while spinners also provide an opportunity for random call-on and multiple activities for the same lesson. Two-color counters are essential in creating understanding of positive and negative operations. Mathlink cubes will be used frequently to allow students better understanding of proportional relationships, geometric surface area and volume and to help create visual representations of mathematical situations. Your donation will truly help to make math exciting, engaging and accessible for all levels of students, while at the same time helping to further solidify a math foundation and allowing students to love math again.
