I teach 14-21 year old students with mild to moderate mental disabilities and/or autism at a public high school in South Carolina. Many of the students live in rural areas and most are from low income families, receiving free/reduced meals. My students move between two self-contained classrooms during the school day. The curriculum includes functional reading (basic application info, employment vocabulary, restaurant/grocery items), functional math (money and time facts, measurement, simple calculations), daily living skills, pre-voc/career/job training, social skills, language development, and good health/safety practices. I emphasize independent living by transitioning the students into real world situations. Proper nutrition education combined with an economical way to provide healthy foods is an essential learning tool for my students. They also benefit from activities that allow real job training. The students are eager to learn and they especially enjoy hands-on activities.
