iPads have become a quickly growing way for children to access a large wealth and breadth of information that they may previously not have had access to. They offer educational apps that are both fun and enticing for children, thereby facilitating an early love of learning. While they will never replace books, iPads for children who are prereaders or who may have a learning disability, prove to be a wonderful resource. Some of the apps that will be added include robust communication apps for our non-verbal children so that they may explore ways to bridge that gaps in their natural abilities to communicate. Other apps include early math activities which research supports is a necessary backbone to math intelligence later in their academic careers. The idea behind this project is that we will be able to pair our peers with our children with disabilities in a shared iPad activity that will help foster social and pragmatic language functions as well as a love for learning and a mutual respect for one another. We envision both expressive and receptive language growth as well as a potential for families to see how their little ones interact with the learning apps and potentially model this idea in their home.
