During my literacy rotations I have 6 of my students working at a listening center, and another 6 working on Reading Eggs, or another educational app on our iPads. The other half of the class is split between myself and my partner teacher working on small group lessons, or guided reading. Since use of headphones in our classroom is a daily activity, it is necessary that we have good quality headphones. Last year, we struggled with low quality/easily broken headphones that I had purchased for use in our classroom. Sadly, many of the headphones did not last the year. Children at this age tend to play with wires, and sometimes even chew on them. In addition to the frequent breaks, was the difficulty my students had winding up the headphones and storing them independently. I would forgo them altogether, but that would only impede my classroom. All of my students benefit from the engaging programs, interactive books, and listening centers that headphones enable us to use.
