  • Renew Imagination: Give My Students a New Library!

    Funded Oct 27, 2009

I wanted to take the time to thank you personally for your incredible generosity and kindness. It is impossible to express how thrilled my kids will be when they receive the book. Many of my students have never owned a book before and I know that this will mean very much to them.

My students are children who feel much more than others, primarily because they see and experience much more than other children their age. Their lives at home and on the streets have stripped them of the one characteristic that makes a child a child: innocence. In a world where the transition between child to adult is blended and unclear, the only thing that can really keep them grounded is education. Language and imagination allow my students to overcome the images that bombard them outside of school, keeping them innocent and young.

With that said, I cannot do enough to express my gratitude. Typed words on a page can really do no justice. They appear flat and unemotional, which is the pure opposite of your precious gift and the joy of my students.

Again, I thank you. I don't think you can possibly know how much your gift has affected both my students and my class. You have renewed their faith in people, language, and the indescribable magic of a well-written novel.

    Sincerely yours,

    Ingrid”

  • Bringing Themes of the Streets to a Text: The Outsiders

    Funded May 8, 2009

Thank you so much for your generous donation towards the education of my students. When copies of the books arrived, my students were so ecstatic that they all immediately wrote their names on the inside cover of their books (for some, this was the first book that they owned)&began reading. Since then, we have been spending our class time together in the world of the Greasers & the Socs. Each day, my students look forward to diving into this book of adventure & brotherhood. They are so absorbed with the characters that they have nicknamed each other with character nicknames!

Again, thank you so much for your movement towards helping America's youth grow. You are an inspiration to us all. ”

  • Transform Their World: A Library of Books They'll Love

    Funded Jun 3, 2009

I wanted to take this opportunity to thank you both again for your inspirational act of altruism. These books have been a real catalyst of change in my students. You have managed to single-handedly transform a classroom of seventh graders into scholars that devour books daily. My students currently speak books, dream books, exchange books, & think about books on a daily basis. They run to me begging for the next book in a series - they know titles, authors, & characters. Not only are they reading, they're wanting to read more! Never before has the classroom been so full of life & never before have students pleaded so desperately for more independent reading time.

Thanks to you, my students are now addicted to reading. At a time when the achievement gap continues to gawk at us all, it is your continuing donations that will give equitable education a fighting chance. With your books, my students have been shown worlds that they have never known before & met people that they never knew existed. Thank you so much for your generosity.”

  • Stretching The Mind: Finding Words, Learning Meaning

    Funded Nov 23, 2008

I wanted to take the time to thank you personally for your incredible generosity and kindness. It is impossible to express how thrilled my kids will be when they receive this dictionary. Many of my students have never owned a book before and I know that this will mean very much to them. They will finally feel like professional students!

It is important for you, my students, & I to work towards bridging the achievement gap. The primary way to do this is to expand our children's minds through literature, vocabulary, & exposure to grammar. The achievement gap is more about communicating one's thoughts thoroughly; therefore, armed with this dictionary, my students will finally be able to express themselves the best way they can.

  • Pushing Limits: Harper Lee's "To Kill a Mockingbird"

    Funded Nov 17, 2008

I wanted to take the time to thank you personally for your incredible generosity and kindness. It is impossible to express how thrilled my kids will be when they receive the book. Many of my students have never owned a book before and I know that this will mean very much to them.

Harper Lee’s To Kill a Mockingbird is one of those rare books with a storyline that has the innate ability to really make kids think about their own lives in relation to the lives of the characters in the book. All of my students, including the ones who claim that they hate reading, will be able to interact actively with the characters in the story, deeply caring for each of them.

  • Stretching the Imagination: Roald Dahl's "The BFG"

    Funded Sep 2, 2008

I wanted to take the time to thank you personally for your incredible generosity and kindness. It is impossible to express how thrilled my kids will be when they receive the book. Many of my students have never owned a book before and I know that this will mean very much to them.

The BFG is one of those rare books with a storyline that has the innate ability to really make kids think about their own lives in relation to the lives of the characters in the book. All of my students, including the ones who claim that they hate reading, were able to interact actively with the characters in the story, deeply caring for each of them. Furthermore, as students in an urban environment, this whimsical world of giants and fantasy is somewhere they can all escape. They can relate to the BFG who feels left out. They can connect to the land of dreams. And most of all, they can imagine, imagine, imagine everything Roald Dahl may have intended for his books.

My students are children who feel much more than others, primarily because they see and experience much more than other children their age. Their lives at home and on the streets have stripped them of the one characteristic that makes a child a child—innocence. • Touching Text: The Outsiders

    Funded Jan 17, 2008

I wanted to thank you personally for your generous donation & kind heart. Growing up, this book was one of those books that changed my life--helping me think about writing & reading in a whole new perspective. Now, I find myself not only a teacher of English, but also a published poet. My students will be SO thrilled to be able to hold a copy of this book in their hands & then SHOCKED when I tell them to go ahead & write their names in the book. Your gift is much more precious than you can even imagine--these are the days of children when every single kind thought is a push towards success.

    Yours truly,

    Ingrid ”
