  • Back To Basics: A Foundation For Learning

    Funded Aug 26, 2013

It was so wonderful opening up your generous donation in front of my students! We received the boxes near the end of class. My students were already sitting in small groups so I let each small group open one box. They were so thrilled to be receiving brand new materials! Many of their families were not able to afford the various materials required of a high school student with a rigorous course load. Your gift has not only removed some of the burden off of their shoulders, but also has laid a strong foundation for learning! With these resources, we have been busily creating writing portfolios and digging deeply into Lorraine Hansberry's "A Raisin in the Sun."

Again, my students and I thank you for all that you have done for us.”

  • Writing Portfolios to Track Student Achievement

    Funded May 23, 2013

Thank you so much for your generous donations. When my students and I received this wonderful package, we were very excited to have a wide array of school resources and materials at our fingertips.

We are currently using these resources to create strong writing portfolios to track our writing growth in the classroom. Students are able to access these portfolios whenever they want to review feedback and reflect on their work throughout the year. Moreover, during parent-teacher conferences, students will be able to articulate how their writing has improved during the first marking period.

A writing portfolio is not only a fundamental part of the writing process, but also a piece that will hold students accountable for their own work. I know that my students will be very proud to share their work at the end of the year. Again, thank you so much.”

  • My Kids Keep Devouring My Books! We Need More!

    Funded Apr 6, 2013

Thank you so much for your generous donations! My students were so excited to receive this wonderful new collection of independent reading books. As newly awakened readers, these books really honed in on their various interests and passions, further increasing their love of reading. They were extremely excited to see books of various genres, and more specifically, books that could relate to their own life. While reading to many kids may seem to be a daunting and unpleasant task, to my students (with these new books), reading became an adventure! Thank you so much for your support in the public education system and your dedication to improving literacy skills for all of our kids.”

  • Give South Bronx Students Amazing Books!

    Funded Jan 29, 2013

Thank you so much for your wonderful gift to my classroom. Your donation has provided dozens of students in a high-need community with amazing books that they will treasure for life. Despite being in the tenth grade, for many of my students, this will be their first year to entirely read a book independently. Your gift, like many others before it, is what allows such small wonders to occur in my classroom.

My students live and go to school in the poorest Congressional district in the country. Outside of school, much of their life is chaotic and unpredictable. As a teacher, I have tried to make my classroom a space of consistency and tranquility. Much of what I do is to find books that ignite fires within their minds and souls. With your consistent support, my students will not only grow up literate, but also as compassionate citizens who have read and learned about many worlds.”

  • Making Nonfiction Interesting for Kids

    Funded Jan 29, 2013

Thank you so much for your generous donation. Your gift to my classroom provides my students with a series of high-interest nonfiction texts that they will grow to love. "The Glass Castle" is a memoir filled with many of the conflicts and unfulfilled dreams that my students can relate to. I, for one, cannot wait to hear the awesome discussions that they will have in class!

My students live and go to school in the poorest Congressional district in the country. Many of them are reading far below grade level despite being in high school. With these high-interest nonfiction books, my students will be motivated to read, both inside & outside of the classroom; thus improving their reading level. Your gift to them helps prepare them for other Common Core texts and college-level work. Thank you so much.”

  • Back To School Materials

    Funded Sep 6, 2012

I wanted to personally thank you for your generous donations to help supply my students with folders and pens. Just this year, you have given over 100 students the basic materials needed to be successful in my courses! Because of you, my students are now well-organized and better prepared to read, write, and fall in love with literature. Never again will I hear in my classroom "But I don't have a pen . . ." thus saving me some much-needed precious instructional time.

My students and I are so thankful for your gifts. You are true believers of the power of education. Thank you for remembering that our students are entitled to not only a free and public education, but a good one as well.”

    With gratitude,

  • Life-Changing Books for Life-Changing Kids

    Funded May 8, 2012

Thank you so much for your generous donations! Because of you, this year, my sophomores will have books in the class library that interest, excite, and move them. These books that I have selected connect directly to the various interests and emotions that writhe through my students on a daily basis. They are books about growing up, finding yourself, & creating an identity. Because of you, my students will have books that speak to them about the things that they worry about, the things they love, and the things that make them scared. My students will be extremely touched that someone was willing to give them brand new books. Moreover, your gift will help push them to dive headfirst into these challenging, but life-changing texts. Thank you so very much for your help in shaping a generation of new readers and writers.

  • High Interest Class Texts To Curb Senioritis

    Funded May 6, 2011

Thank you so much for your generous gift to our school and our first year of graduates! After years of reading often unrelatable texts from the English canon, my students were ecstatic to have access to more modern and realistic novels. It became a daily occurrence to see normally lethargic seniors nearing the end of their high school careers with their noses buried in books, walking through the hallway. With your gift, you single-handedly revitalized my students' interest in literature.

Again, thank you so much for your donations. ”
