  • Making English Relevant: New Titles to Push Student Inquiry

    Funded Sep 2, 2015

Thank you so much for your gift of books to our school. As you know, this is our first year having an honors 12th grade English class. Because of your donation, we are able to support the learning of our most gifted students. The books that you have given our school cover a large spectrum of interests while being simultaneously rigorous and culturally relevant. They will definitely be a great catalyst to deep conversations about literature and life and begin to adequately prepare our young people for life beyond high school. Thank you so much for all that you do.”

    With gratitude,

    Ms. Chung

  • Help My Students Share their Life Stories!

    Funded Jul 13, 2015

Thank you so much for giving our school and our students "Life Stories." This game is a great icebreaker that pushes both students and adults to authentically engage with one another using questions, statements, and actions. In a very culturally relevant way, it honors the stories of our students and empowers them to share these stories with one another.

When our newest advisors saw this game, they were excited to have an activity that they can always utilize to build community. Regardless of the age group, advisors can bring this game with them to advisory to prompt dialogue and to build community and safe spaces. We thank you wholeheartedly for what you have given our school.”

    With gratitude,

    Ms. Chung

  • Help My Students Run the World!

    Funded Mar 28, 2015

Thank you so much for your benevolent gift to our school. This T-shirt press will not only teach our students the financial literacy skills that are necessary for our young people to be well rounded citizens, it will also expose them to the possibility of being young business owners (rather than young people who work for others). Your generosity has opened many different doors of opportunity that our students were not previously privy to. "Project Ink," the after school program that will use this t-shirt press, will indefinitely empower our students to be creative and forward-thinking business people in a world that functions largely on the laws of business.”

  • School Supplies for the First Day of School!

    Funded Sep 2, 2015

Thank you so much for your generous donation to our school. These school supplies have supported the classrooms of many of our high school English students. Because of you, all of our students were able to start instruction on the first day of school without worrying about their families being able to purchase the necessary materials for success. When my students saw these new materials, they were so thrilled to be gifted brand new folders and notebooks. We thank you so much for your generosity.”

  • Give Our Seniors a Prom to Remember!

    Funded Feb 2, 2015

Thank you so much for your generous gift to our high school seniors. Our prom theme this year was "Casino Royale." The backdrop that came with the photo booth that featured Daniel Craig fluidly tied this theme together. Because of you, our senior prom was definitely a night to remember. Our students were able to take home mementos of the night in the form of photos. When the students saw the photo booth, they were so excited to be able to document themselves looking like young kings and queens. Thank you so much for what you have given to our young people.”

  • New & Exciting Books to Increase Independent Reading

    Funded Nov 25, 2014

Thank you so much for your generous donation to my students and my classroom. When my ravenous bookworms received these new books, they were so thrilled that they all made a mad dash for the boxes! It's quite the teacher's dream when she has to "fight" her students off of books. Your gift has given my students a diverse collection of titles to choose from, ensuring that every single one of my students is able to find his or her book of choice.

With these new books, my students (whose reading level varies anywhere from 6th grade to college level) are finding themselves reading at home and during lunch breaks . . . and LOVING it! Not only are they enjoying independent reading time, they are simultaneously increasing their reading levels each day. We (my school, my students' parents, and I) could not possibly be more grateful.”

  • Give My Students New Worlds Through Books!

    Funded Dec 30, 2014

Thank you so much for your generous donations to my classroom. Not only are my students thrilled to receive new independent reading books, they have developed a newfound thirst for adolescent fiction! With these new texts, you will be supporting my students by giving them opportunities to increase their reading level in a variety of engaging ways. While many of my students entered my classroom below reading level, with these new books, you are leveling the playing field for these curious young men and women. Literacy is an essential part of college success. Thank you so much for doing your part in ensuring that all of our young people have the opportunity to be anything that they want to be.”

  • Give My Boys Uniform Ties To Highlight Their Brotherhood

    Funded Dec 30, 2014

I would be remiss to say that you have not had an incredible impact on both the success of Umoja and the lives of our boys. When our Umoja Leaders received the ties, they were beyond thrilled. To this day, they wear the ties with pride, particularly because they are a symbol of the pledge that they made over the summer. Each of our young men renewed their pledge to their brothers and to Umoja prior to receiving a tie. It is a symbol that they bear proudly to demonstrate their commitment to the program, to each other, and to high school graduation.

You have been such a large part of Umoja and I look forward to all of the memories that you will continue to make with our young men. Thank you so much for all that you do.”

  • Engaging Students In "Real Talk" For Social Emotional Growth

    Funded Mar 4, 2014

Thank you so much for your generous donation to my school! Oftentimes, in urban education, the importance of social-emotional growth is neglected in favor of test scores and data. However, in my school, we believe that there is a direct correlation with healthy and positive social-emotional growth and academic achievement. If our students grow up to be happy, well meaning, & reflective young people, they will be more resilient in the face of tough questions, hard tests, and difficult times. As a result, we deeply value the advisory system as a place where we can teach our students the life skills that they will need to not only be excellent students, but good people. Your gift will help support our advisors by giving them the tools to engage in fierce conversations with our students.

Thank you for believing that my students and my school can go from good to great.”

  • Help My Students Love Independent Reading!

    Funded Dec 29, 2013

Thank you so much for your generous donation to my classroom. My students were so excited to receive these brand new books in the midst of their independent reading unit. As an English teacher, there is nothing more inspiring than watching students ravenously devour book after book. Not only have you brought some texts that are fresh and innovative to my classroom, you have re-inflamed a love of reading in my kids.

Many of my students are severely behind in reading. Ironically, one of the only ways to improve one's reading level is to read more. By providing these high-interest texts to my kids, you are playing a huge role in closing the achievement gap.”

    With gratitude,
