  • Chromebooks Are the New Textbooks

    Funded Nov 12, 2018

I am very happy that you funded this project for my classroom. My students are very grateful along with myself to have these two laptops to use in our classroom. When they arrived and I told them what they were, there was a great deal of gawking that occurred as I unboxed them. The students commented on how nice they looked and could not wait to start using them.

They have been using them to do their intervention work and I must say I see so much more enthusiasm to go do their intervention now than before, due to the fact they will be doing them on the new computers. They have also used them to access textbooks for reading and follow along with the lesson, so the computers are getting a good workout.

Thank you again for your generosity and my students thank you as well.”

    With gratitude,

    Mr. Hylton

  • Leaders Are Readers

    Funded Oct 31, 2018

The books have been an excellent addition to my classroom. They have generated even more excitement for reading than I thought they would. My boys who are the most reluctant to read are now trying to read at least two books per week. They are eating up the captain underpants books especially.

I am also hearing conversations among the students about which of the books they like, or recommending books to each other. I plan to use the book Wonder to do a literature circle with my different reading groups and there was a great debate about which group should start first because they all want a chance to get into the book.

They use a program called Accelerated Reader that gives a quiz to test how much of the book the student remembers and my students have been getting 90s and 100s on these quizzes. Thank you so much for your generosity, it is really helping my students to become readers.”

    With gratitude,

    Mr. Hylton

They will be able to access the digital programs that teach them at their individual levels such as iReady. They will use MS Word to write papers and Powerpoint to do slideshows. They will use Office 365 to save documents on One-drive. They will do virtual field trips to travel to places that are new to them. The laptops will also have the students become comfortable with working with computers which is important because their standardized tests are computer based. The use of the laptops on a daily basis will build the familiarity and knowledge they need to be be successful on these tests.
