I am a librarian at a Title 1 public high school in Hawaii. This means that most of the students qualify for free/reduced lunch, and their families have limited incomes. A majority of my students lack the ability to access computers and the Internet at home. Additionally, many of my students do not use English as their primary language. So beyond the typical issues of just making it through high school, they must struggle through it in a language that is unfamiliar and uncomfortable for them. They have the challenge of learning high-level concepts while faced with learning basic linguistic skills. They accept this challenge and work diligently to overcome it, but a lack of reliable resources often makes this task daunting for them.
