2017 marks the first year our school has been able to make the financial investment to support Principles of Biomedical Science (PBS), a curriculum offered by Project Lead the Way. However, given the cost of materials for the course it is impossible for the school to fully fund all the supplies. My students and I are looking for support from you to help increase opportunities for more students in STEM fields. Throughout the year, students are trying to determine the cause of death of a fictional character- Anna Garcia- and in doing so, they explore hot topics such as forensics, diabetes, heart disease, sickle cell anemia, and infectious diseases. Our students will use the centrifuge to process various samples, including blood samples to determine hematocrit levels or red blood cell content. In Unit 4, students are trying to determine the bacterial infection with which Anna was infected; to do that students will take on the role of a microbiologist and culture/grow bacteria in which the incubator is required. Being able to have and use materials that scientists use in research is critical in providing a full experience. High school is a time where students are determining their passion and interests , and for me there is nothing more exciting than seeing my resilient students who come from the neighborhoods they do succeeding in scientific challenges!
