  • This Time, Students Choose the Titles! Part 11

    Funded Jul 28, 2024

Thank you so much for supporting my classroom library. When the delivery of books arrived in my classroom, my students could not wait to see which of their book requests had been granted. They were very excited to take their books home and read.

The delivery of student-requested books was very inspiring. It sparked more book requests and motivated children to read for their own enjoyment. Getting students excited about reading is the primary goal of developing this library.

Thank you for helping me achieve this goal.”

  • Lunchtime Book Club: Ghost

    Funded Dec 7, 2023

Thank you for your generous donation. My Lunchtime Book Club is thoroughly enjoying reading Ghost by Jason Reynolds. My students immediately connected with the characters in the book.

The goal of my Lunchtime Book Club is to foster a love of reading that will last a lifetime.

Having the resources to achieve this goal is critically important.

On behalf of the Gordon Parks School, I sincerely thank you for your kindness. My Lunchtime Book Club would not be as successful without your donation.”

    With gratitude,

    Mr. Rosenberg

  • Lunchtime Book Club: They Called Us Enemy

    Funded Nov 20, 2023

Thank you for funding a class set of the graphic novel "They Called Us Enemy."

I chose this book because, as a graphic novel, it is accessible to students of all reading levels and also for the subect matter. Japanese internment is an important yet often ignored part of American History.

I did not forsee the incredible impact the book would have on my students, from outrage that this could happen in the United States to confusion as to why American citizens were considered "enemies" to curiousity and eagerness to learn more. The book inspired us to watch George Takei's TED talk on his experience in the internment camp.

"They Called Us Enemy" was a hit with my Lunchtime Book Club. Thank you for providing my students with an opportunity to explore history from a personal perspective.”

    With gratitude,

    Mr. Rosenberg

This classroom project was brought to life by Con Edison and 2 other donors.
My students love to listen and read out loud along with their classmates. In fact, they give up their lunch period for the opportunity to read while they eat. The book club consists of up to 30 responsible and motivated students. In middle school, reading with a small group of friends is a treat for the students.
