Coding with Legos and OSMO
Funded Dec 12, 2017Thank you for funding our project for an iPad, Legos and and OSMOS kit. Last week a group of GATE students used the materials to build the Legos Boosts. They had a great time designing, coding and building. These materials have helped students problem solve, design, plan, and troubleshoot.
In addition to building the Legos, students used the iPad and OSMOS kit to play skill building games. The practiced fractions (a big concept we practice in third grade), reading and math facts practice.
The iPad alone is a great learning tool. There are so many educational apps that students can access to practice multiple skills.
My students love to work with technology. Using the iPad, Legos and OSMOS is a great way for students to practice 21st century skills. The materials are engaging and students are learning in a fun way. Thank you for your generosity.”

Funded Jan 25, 2018Thank you for funding our project for books. They have been a huge hit. The books requested in this project were chosen to fill the needs of my emerging readers.
A year ago, my school had a fire and I lost my entire library. Immediately after the fire, amazing donors donated books but the titles were chosen for the students I had in my class at the time. They were reading more advanced chapter books, which are not books that my current students can read.
The books that you donated are perfect for my class. They are high-interest, beginning level chapter books. They are giving my students the confidence as they are reading chapter books and are being successful reading theses books. Reading high level chapter books when students are not ready to read those books can be frustrating and discouraging.
We have enough books to rotate through my classroom to keep them busy for the rest of the year. Students will be successful reading these books which will increase their interest in reading.
Thank you for your generosity by putting these much needed books into the hands of my students.”

Funded Dec 12, 2017Thank you for funding our project for a GoPro video camera and art supplies for our interview an expert project.
Each year our junior high students attend Dinner with a Scientist. The students get to meet the scientists and learn about their careers. There are all different types of experts from biologists, coders, physical therapists, engineers and doctors, just to mention a few.
This next year when we attend the dinner, I would like my students to interview the different experts to learn more about their jobs. They will then use the notepads, pens and art supplies to reports their findings to their peers.
In addition to be inspired by all the different STEM jobs, students will learn how prepare and conduct an interview. They will also learn how to present their findings in an engaging manner, making sure to make their presentation is engaging and enlightening to their audience (classmates).
Thank you for your generosity. I look forward to seeing all the amazing project my students will create.”

Funded Nov 14, 2017Thank you for supplying my classroom with materials to make slime. Slime making is all the rage. My students talk about it all the time and discuss their different recipes on how to make slime when they are at recess.
We started off the year by having a slime station for our Halloween celebration. They loved manipulating the goo, watching it take different shape and dripping from their hands.
Along with the traditional supplies, I requested magnetic fillings, Instasnow and Model Magic. These are all materials that can be added to the slime to create a different texture. We will the use the magnetic fillings to watch the goo gobble up a magnet, use the Instasnow to create a fluffy slime and use the Model Magic to create a stiffer slime. Having the supplies to make different types of slime makes our learning a lot more fun as we learn about physical science, particularly learning about solids and liquids.
Thank you for the supplies to make our learning more effective, fun and hands-on!”

Funded Oct 19, 2017Thank you for funding our project for books. This books chosen for this project were for sets of chapter books so my students can participate in books clubs. Having a partner to read with is very motivating and helps increase my students' reading fluency and comprehension.
I have a couple of boys who love reading about history and biographies. I had requested a few facts tracker from the Magic Tree House collection. I know my boys will love reading the books as they have facts related to real events like when he dinosaurs were roaming the Earth or during the Civil War. I also chose books that would reach my girls, like Heidi Heckelbeck. My girls are currently interested in books that focusing on growing up, peer interactions and social topics. The characters in the books are relatable and the content of the stories provides guidance for common every day issues like bullying and friendship problems.
Thank you for supporting my classroom by seeing this project through full funding. My students are enjoying the books.”

Funded Oct 20, 2017Thank you for funding our project for new books. My students were in need of these books. My entire classroom was lost to a fire in January. It has been a task trying to rebuild a classroom library after 22 years of teaching. The books you donated will help up rebuild
I have requested these books for two reason. One is to help my students with their Accelerated Reading program. Students are giving a reading level based on a reading comprehension test. As you can imagine, with 24 students, I have a variety of reading levels. In order to keep my students on track and reading books in their levels, they need to have a lot of books at their fingertips. These new books will help with having more choices.
The second reason I have requested these books is so my students have books for our 40 Book Challenge. I have challenged my students to read 40 books covering a variety of genres. My classroom was lacking in genres such as historical fiction, poetry and picture books. The books requested in this project are to make sure my students have the books they need to meet their reading goals.
Thank you for helping us rebuild our classroom. The books have already been well received, read and loved my eager reading third graders.”

Funded Apr 19, 2017Our first 10K girls' running club was a huge success. All the girls who participated, their moms and three teachers finished their first 6 mile run. It was a tough one, too!
We are all so proud of these girls for participating and making their goals of running a 10K. The girls endured high temperatures, hail, downpours and mud over the two month course of training. They persevered and took every obstacle as a challenge.
As a result, one of the girls finished in third place overall. She had to compete with and age range of girls that were 10-18 years old. We are so proud of our 3rd place finisher.
One other participant was only able to run the two mile course. She finished first overall! This girl also went on to apply for the scholarship offered by the organizers of their run and won a $2222.22 scholarship to pursue her passion!
All of these accomplishments were met because of this girls' running club. Your contribution to the program helped these girls meet and exceed their goals. Thank you for donating the clothing to keep the girls dressed appropriately and comfortable. They loved the shirts!
Thank you for you supporting our program. It was fun to watch these girls, girls who thought they would never make their first mile on the first day of practice. Thank you for helping make it happen.”

Funded Oct 19, 2017Thank you for your generosity by funding our Donors Choose project for fall holiday books. My school suffered from a fire in January and I lost my entire classroom. When I started planning lessons and activities I realized that I didn't have my go to books that I read to my students every year. That is the reason for the request of these holiday books.
The books couldn't have arrived at a better time. We just finished reading all of the Thanksgiving books. We laughed all the light hearted stories and enjoyed hearing about the historical events that developed the Thanksgiving holiday.
My students were so excited about the books they kept taking them off the table when opening the boxes. I never had time to process the books to be put on our bookshelf!
Thank you for helping us rebuild our library. Our shelves were pretty bare bones and we were in desperate need of adding a variety of books to them. Thank you for helping us make this happen.”

Funded Oct 19, 2017I cannot thank you enough for your generosity by funding our project for books. My school had a fire in January and my entire library was discarded due to smoke damage. I have been quickly replacing all the books that were lost. Having taught and collected books for 22 year, it has been a big task.
This year my students are involved in two reading programs. The first is Accelerated Reader which is a reading comprehension program. Students are given a reading level based on a test they take at the beginning of the year. Some of the books students have at their reading level are short so students need a large collection of these books. May times they will read a book every day or two, so they need to have plenty of books so they can reach their reading goals.
The second program is called the 40 Book Challenge. I am challenging my students to read 40 books in a variety of genres by the end of this school year. In order to participate, my students need books, books that cover over 10 different genres such as realistic fiction, fantasy and poetry. When I started this challenge, I noticed my library was lacking books in certain genres, so the books requested in this grant were chosen to help give my students more choices.
So far, my students are about one-third of the way to their goals. Your generous donation of these books will keep my students reading and moving forward with their goals. I look forward to updating you in the spring to let your know my students have reached their goals, and beyond!”

Funded Sep 5, 2017Thank you for funding our project for books on diversity. Our class was in great need of these books. Our school had a fire in January and my entire classroom library was lost. This year it has been my project to quickly rebuild my library. My students stay engaged and busy when they have a lot of books at their fingertips.
The books requested in this grant are to focus on the subject of diversity. In today's world, there has been so much divisiveness, and my hope is to expose my students to different literature that celebrates differences and gives students tools to become positive contributors to society. These books focus on topics such as self-esteem, being creative and unique, and how to deal with hard topics such as bullies, unfair treatment of others, and low self esteem.
Thank you for helping us rebuild our classroom. These books have already been well loved by my students. As soon as they arrived, I had many requests as to which book they wanted to read first. The books have since been traded from one student to another, well loved and appreciated. Thank you!”

Mrs. Azevedo
