My third grade classroom is like a quilt composed of students from varying backgrounds. A majority of my students, approximately 80%, come from impoverished households. Several students do not live with their biological parents. Despite their challenging home lives, they come to school each day eager to learn. Being an International Baccalaureate (IB) school proves challenging for my students. This rigorous curriculum teaches them how to be inquirers and in charge of their learning. It has been fascinating to see my students rise to the challenge. They work together to solve problems and research new learning, and then share it with their classmates. Writing is especially challenging for them, but each student has produced a published piece of writing on which they worked through the entire writing process. They were so proud of their work that they celebrated with an "Author's Party." My students work very hard!
