  • "Highlights" of High School

    Funded Aug 11, 2020

Thank you so much for providing my kids with some very basic school supplies. I now have highlighters, pens, sticky notes, and much more, to give each child when they check in at the start of this school year. We are not meeting as a class this quarter because of the pandemic so each child will have these resources to take home.

It may seem like a small or unimportant thing, a highlighter or eraser, but when kids are dealing with stress in so many other places, it is nice to know my students will have the basic necessities for success in school.

Again, thank you for your kindness!”

    With gratitude,

    Ms. Tanner

  • Celebrating Persepolis The Story Of A Childhood

    Funded Jul 15, 2020

Thank you so much for your continued support of my students. Preparing to teach for the upcoming school year has been a challenge. Since students are unable to share books, due to the pandemic, it would have been impossible to cover our usual curriculum. Thanks to your generosity, my students now have the books they need to make this a great year.

The story if Persepolis is one that could be read and enjoyed by anyone who has a taste for young adult fiction. But, it is particularly appropriate for my students. The book is written in a graphic novel format and is therefore very accessible to all. However, the content and illustrations challenge the reader to examine their personal understanding of cultural norms. This novel sets the stage for great in-class discussions.

Again, thank you so much for your support!”

  • Critically Coaching Kids Concerning The Crucible

    Funded May 28, 2020

Thank you so much for your generous donations to my Crucible Project. These books will make a huge difference for my kids next year. As most of you are aware, school is now out for summer. Students and their families are trying to regroup and prepare for what summer will look like. Teachers all over the world are are trying to figure out what school will look like next year. Teachers in our district have been notified to prepare for both in-class and on-line teaching.

I often have just one or two classroom sets of novels for my students to share. This project has made it possible for each of my students to have their own book to use. They will no longer be required to share with three other kids. Thank you, thank you, thank you!”

  • Let's Hit The Road With The Motorcycle Diaries

    Funded May 8, 2020

Thank you so much for your support. This project will help make it possible for each of my students to have a copy of The Motorcycle Diaries to take home in the event we do not return to school in August.

This book provides a beautiful platform for discussing several serious topics such as globalization, education, poverty, etc. Of course, my hope would be to have these discussions in the classroom where I can encourage active and passionate debates. My fingers are still crossed that we will return in August.”

  • A Purple Hibiscus for Honors 11

    Funded May 4, 2020

Wow, I don't really know how to explain the impact this project will have on my classroom next year. In these difficult times we have no idea how our classrooms will look. Will we actually be in the school or will we once again be teaching from our homes using a computer? It's just impossible to know.

Our school is pretty big, about 3000 students. My classes are also large, they average is around 35 students per class. I often do not have enough books for each student to check one out for home use.

This project will allow each of my students to check out a book of there own just in case we are, once again, teaching on line.

(Sorry about the pictures, no kids, no school. Just my piano bench, the books, and happy teacher shoes)”

    With gratitude,

    Ms. Tanner

  • Inspire Me With An "Inspirion"

    Funded Apr 11, 2020

Having this project fund has made a great difference in my ability to reach my kids during this online teaching experience. In my home there are two teachers and only one desktop computer. This desktop also happens to be located in the closet space of a small spare bedroom which also doubles as our office. Needless to say, there is not enough room for two adults to share the computer space. Now that I have the new computer, I have been able to move to the sunny living room and make it my classroom (much nicer arrangement!).

The new computer is also very lightweight and easy to move around. In the event that I ever have guests again it will not be any trouble tucking it away in the office. The screen is smaller than the big desktop but is it plenty big (as you can see from the pictures). I will be purchasing a wireless mouse soon because I find the touch pad a little troubling. I have been learning how to use several programs that I would not have even attempted, without this computer. We are using Canvas as the platform to reach our kids but we are also able to use programs like TEAMS and ZOOM to conference with them.

When we go back to school, this computer will be a great resource in the classroom as well. Thank you so very much!”

  • Crunch, Munch, Help! I Forgot Lunch!

    Funded Mar 8, 2020

I feel so lucky to have such a wonderful support system in the Donors Choose community. My students were so delighted when we opened the boxes of goodies. We will not be worrying, anytime soon, where our classroom snacks will come from.

The cookies were a giant hit and the chips are always a welcome treat. The pop-tarts and granola bars, however, took center stage. Knowing that I have kid-friendly food for those hungry days is a really comforting feeling.

We decided, as a class, that we could also use some of the treats as a reward for getting work completed on time. I'm sure the kids will come up with many new and exciting ways to get one of our yummy treats. Thank you again!”

    With gratitude,

    Ms. Tanner

  • I Project A Bright Future!

    Funded Jan 14, 2020

Thank you so much for the wonderful cart and overhear projector. We have used it everyday since it arrived. As you can see from the pictures, the kids are thrilled to have a new projector in the classroom. Kids learn by doing, they really love to be involved with the process. With this new gift we are able work together on projects as a whole class. We break up into groups and the kids take turns teaching parts of the lesson to the whole class. I think the most exciting part of this project is that the kids were the push behind it. They wanted to be the teacher and share their knowledge with the rest of the class. Now, that wish is a reality.”

  • Grant Us Global Glee

    Funded Nov 19, 2019

I want to thank each one of you for the truly beautiful world globe that now stands proudly in my classroom. We were so excited about the possibility of a new globe but the reality of it far exceeds our expectations. It is just so beautiful. When we first opened the box the kids were excited about the wonderful size of the globe because the one we had borrowed from another teacher was only about 12 inches in diameter. In addition, the colors are very pleasing and it even has slightly raised surfaces for the mountain ranges. The adjustable height on the stand makes it so easy for all my kids to see everything it has to offer. We use it every day in our English Language Learners Geography class. Thank you so much!”

  • Let's Put Some Spice in Shakespeare!

    Funded Oct 7, 2019

Putting some spice in Shakespeare was such a great idea. My students have traditionally had some trouble enjoying the writings of the great Shakespeare. Now that we have new, and very accessible versions of Shakespeare, the kids are more than willing to jump into the readings.

We are using the chips and salsa to really spice up the experience. Kids are able to enjoy a tasty treat while reading Much Ado about Nothing. They are really have a fun time time with this great classic. In addition, the beanbag chairs we received from a previous project serve as a great incentive to get the reading going. The kids who volunteer to read or explain the literature get to sit in the beanbag chairs! Wonderful reward.

Thank you so much for the chance to show kids that Shakespeare can be fun.”

    With gratitude,

    Ms. Tanner

West High is an inner-city school with a population of over 2500 students ranging in age from twelve to eighteen. Some of the many programs available to students include Special Education, ESL Language Arts, Advanced Placement and Honors Programs, as well as The International Baccalaureate Program. The majority of my time is spent teaching English Language Learners. Many of these students struggle diligently to achieve even minimal success when it comes to state mandated competency tests. In an effort to more closely align our curriculum with that of the common core, my classes have taken on even more rigor. Some of my students are unable to succeed. I believe with a little support, through the use of programs that can be accessed through these tablets, my students can achieve more success.
