  • Warmth in Service

    Funded Jan 22, 2022

Thank you so much for your wonderful support. The resources we received will make such a difference to so many children in our elementary schools. My high school students are enjoying the process of making quilts and filling goodie bags to deliver to kids in their own neighborhoods.

The quilting frames are set up in the back of my classroom and whenever kids have extra time they are welcome to work on a quilt. They are allowed to come in during lunch as well as stay after school to complete our project.

Not only are they learning the old-fashioned skill of quilting, they are literally tying themselves to the community.”

  • Snackin' Good Time!

    Funded Dec 29, 2021

Thank you so much for your help funding our Snackin' Good Time Project! Kids really do learn so much better when they are not hungry. It was so fun to see the kids respond as the boxes of treats just kept arriving. They were piled in the front of the classroom and almost reached the ceiling.

I had not planned on writing another project for treats this year. However, several weeks ago we found our school is a very frightening place. We were forced into a lockdown for about five hours where no one was allowed to leave the room. Needless to say my students became very hungry during this event. I was able to open my cupboards and offer a little comfort. The situations was handled well, but it was very stressful for all concerned. My My cupboards are once again overflowing.”

  • Did Someone Say Snacks?

    Funded Aug 29, 2021

Thank you so much for supporting our latest project. When I brought all the treats to school to fill our pantry, the kids were pretty excited. Even though we are all still wearing masks in our school, kids still get hungry and need a snack now and then. The pantry is full of fun treats and snacks for my students.

Our school has about 3,000 students, many of which come from households that are struggling to provide essentials for their kids. Not only does our pantry have delicious treats, it also has many school supplies necessary for educational success.

It has been a difficult and trying 18 months for everyone. These treats will hopefully make this year a little easier!”

  • Keyboard & Monitor for at Home Teaching

    Funded Dec 13, 2020

Your support this year has been so amazing! The outpouring of love and appreciation for teachers has been remarkable. I am so thankful for being part of the DonorsChoose family.

Remote teaching and learning has been a challenge not only for students but also for teachers. Working from a laptop is not ideal because the keyboard is so close to the screen and, let's face it, no one wants to see a face that closely! The success of the keyboard project has made such a difference. I am able to scoot back from the screen and still work on the keyboard. In addition to the keyboard, the new monitor has made it possible for me to have two screens open at the same time. This is game-changer! I can have the kids on one screen and the work on the other screen. I am wishing I had requested this second screen years ago!

Again, thank you and please know what a tremendous difference you make in the lives of teachers!”

  • Dear Martin

    Funded Dec 1, 2020

Reading can, at times, be a challenge. My students, like many kids today, are struggling to find the motivation needed to get their school work completed. Sometimes the books available to them are out of date or do little to hold their interest. "Dear Martin" by Nic Stone is very different. The author John Green called this book "A powerful, wrenching, and compulsively readable story that lays bare the history, and the present, of racism in America. I am looking forward to using this book next quarter when most of my students will return from our Covid shutdown. I just know this is a book they will actively want to read and discuss. Thank you so much for providing this opportunity.”

  • I Can't "Stand" It Anymore!

    Funded Dec 1, 2020

I wish I could tell you what a difference my new adjustable desk has made! I am now able to teach standing or sitting. I am not locked into my chair all day and my back no longer hurts. I have to wonder why I have never thought of having a desk like this before. It is electric and moves up and down soundlessly with just press of a button. It is large enough to accommodate my computer, an additional monitor, a remote DVD player, and a file rack. It even has a slide-out shelf for the keyboard and mouse. Thank you for your continued generosity!”

  • Let's Ace English Language Arts

    Funded Oct 1, 2020

Thank you so much for supporting my latest Donors Choose project. I am now able to give each of my ninth-grade students a copy of "Everything You Need to Ace English Language Arts In One Big Fat Notebook". This is a very user-friendly resource, full of information concerning how to write a great paper and how to read and understand literature. Since we are currently a fully online school, my students do not have access to many of the resources they usually have at their fingertips. Now, they do. Thank you so much for being part of this success story.”

  • Making Things "Write"

    Funded Aug 28, 2020

My students have not yet seen this project. They will be able to come to the school next week, in scheduled groups of three or four, to pick up the pencil bags. They are simply going to be thrilled. We are teaching online this for at least the first part of this year. Each student will now have a great canvas pencil bag, post-it notes, mechanical pencils, colored pencils, pens, and much much more.

Many of my kids do not have the resources to purchase these items on their own. This will surly help to make their educational experience a little better this year.

It is with a very full heart that I thank you for your generous donations!”

  • "Mark" My Place

    Funded Aug 11, 2020

The supplies from this project have arrived at my house. What an terrific picture it was. My house looked like school warehouse had exploded. My family jumped in and helped me put together school supply packages for each one of my students. Baskets were filled with these beautiful packages and they will now be handed out to each student on the day they come to pick up their books and supplies they need to work from home.

The items might seem like small things: pens, pencils, sticky notes, erasers, pencil pouch, etc. but for many of my kids, these items are not common in their homes. Thanks to your generosity, my students will now have their very own set of these school supplies.”

  • "Pencil" Me In!

    Funded Aug 11, 2020

The Apple Pencils have arrived. What an amazing addition to my online classroom. These pencils make note-taking a breeze and the creative art possibilities are limitless. It's like having a mini whiteboard I can use to supplement my online presentations. When this project was first written, I had hoped we would be be teaching a hybrid type of schedule where I would be able to have some kids in my classroom and I would be able to teach the kids how to use the pencils. We are not there yet.

I would love for each of my students to be able to have one of these pencils. I can see how they could easily use them in a math or science classroom. For now, I will be using them to teach class and when we return to the classroom, I hope to have the kids use them to make creative projects for book talks at the end of our thematic novel units.

Again, thank you for your continued support of my classroom.”

West High is an inner-city school with a population of over 2500 students ranging in age from twelve to eighteen. Some of the many programs available to students include Special Education, ESL Language Arts, Advanced Placement and Honors Programs, as well as The International Baccalaureate Program. The majority of my time is spent teaching English Language Learners. Many of these students struggle diligently to achieve even minimal success when it comes to state mandated competency tests. In an effort to more closely align our curriculum with that of the common core, my classes have taken on even more rigor. Some of my students are unable to succeed. I believe with a little support, through the use of programs that can be accessed through these tablets, my students can achieve more success.
